Can an IPA be black? Semantics aside, this noir version has subtle coffee undertones born of a blend of oats with dark, Munich and crystal malts. What emerges is something deeper, less orthodox, and all its own. After 22 trial runs in our Bend and Portland pubs, we got it right.
Malt: Pale, Crystal, Chocolate, Chocolate Wheat, Black Barley, Flaked Oats, Toasted Oats.
Hops: Northern Brewer, Nugget, Centennial, Amarillo, Cascade, Citra

Bottle. Deep dark brown color. Blackcurrant, licorice and figs in the aroma. Medium to full bodied. Firm hopbitter flavor with melon, licorice, black berries, roast. A very interesting combination that works quite well in this beer. Firm hopbitter aftertaste with dried fruit, roast and laurel

22 oz bottle poured into a Spiegelau tulip. Best by 8/21/2014. Black with a finger of tan head. Nice webby lacing. Aromas of chocolate, roast, pine, floral notes. Tastes of floral notes, chocolate, roast, pine, caramel. Medium body with a dry finish. Creamy mouthfeel. Medium carbonation. Still good despite it being around 2 weeks past the best by date.

Draft pour at Special Brews. Pours really dark with a lasting tan head. Super toasty aroma. Roasted malt flavor. A little smokey too. Really interesting beer with a burnt aftertaste. Overall really good beer.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, best before 8/21/2014. Pours fairly pitch black color with a 2 finger dense and rocky khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of pineapple, peach, grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, floral, grass, light pine, chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, toast, light coffee, and floral/roasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of juicy citrus/tropical hops and moderate dark/roasted malt sweetness; with good strength. Taste of big pineapple, peach, grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, floral, grass, pine, chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, toast, light coffee, light char, and floral/roasted earthiness. Good amount of pine/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of pineapple, peach, grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, floral, grass, pine, chocolate, cocoa, roast, toast, light coffee, light char, and floral/roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Awesome balance and complexity of juicy citrus/tropical hops and moderate dark/roasted malt flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, crisp, and fairly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome Black IPA. All around great complexity and balance of juicy citrus/tropical hops and moderate dark/roasted malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to sip on. A highly enjoyable offering.

This was poured into a nonic pint glass.
The best by date says: \"08/21/14.\"
The appearance was a nice pitch black color with a super nice white to off white foamy head that rose subtly into a mountain of a head.
The smell had a nice roasty coffee blended into some oats that end up allowing some dark sweet chocolatey malts come forth nicely. Once the beer warmed up a bit, there was even a nice citrusy hoppiness rolling under my nose.
The taste was mainly roasty and sweet as it followed the nose quite a bit which in turn allowed that nice citrusy aspect come back in the flavoring subtly. The aftertaste was roasty and sweet and that lead to a nice crisp slightly chocolatey finish.
On the palate, this one sits about a light to medium on the body and it allowed a fairly nice sessionable aspect about it. The carbonation seemed a tad smoother than most black ales I’ve had, but honestly, there wasn’t much wrong with that to me.
Overall, this was a well worthy black ale to come back to.

Bottle. A- Cascade hops, roasty, hoppy, pine, citrus, pepper. A- Black color, black liquid, tan head. T- Pepper, pine, bitter, roasty. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, bitter finish. O- The aroma is full of cascade hops but the taste is surprisingly mellow from what you would expect. Dank and bitter but easy to drink.

Location: Sampled at Printer's Row Wine Shop, 6/3/14
Aroma: The nose has roasted and caramel malts, with some citrus/grapefruit hops
Appearance: It pours a dark brown color with a creamy lighter brown colored head on it
Flavor: The flavor is roasty, lightly sweet, and has a solid amount of bitterness as well
Palate: The body is medium, it has a smooth feel, and a pretty dry finish
Overall Impression: This is a very nice example of the Black IPA (as we call it here) or Cascadian Dark (as Deschutes prefers to call it). For the record, I honestly don't care. It reminds me of the beer pong vs. beirut debate (another one where I don't care what you call it). Anyway, I like the beer.

Purchased at Bottles and Cans in Chicago, IL; enjoyed at home on a Thursday very nice early summer night. Appearance is moderate to light consistency, pitch black, light tan head. Aroma of light chocolate, oats, and light hops. Taste goes down relatively light, mix of chocolate and oats, but not hoppy at all, very faint bitterness, light spice. Overall it’s just decent.
