Can an IPA be black? Semantics aside, this noir version has subtle coffee undertones born of a blend of oats with dark, Munich and crystal malts. What emerges is something deeper, less orthodox, and all its own. After 22 trial runs in our Bend and Portland pubs, we got it right.
Malt: Pale, Crystal, Chocolate, Chocolate Wheat, Black Barley, Flaked Oats, Toasted Oats.
Hops: Northern Brewer, Nugget, Centennial, Amarillo, Cascade, Citra

Opaque black beer. Good tan head. Light hoppy nose. Semi dry palate, turning softer. Nettley grassy hops dominate lightly roasted dark malt. No bitterness in the dark malt. Finishes semi dry with more grassy hops. Nice.

Pour is a dark black with a big tan head. Aroma is hops and more hops with a chocholate base. Flavor is again a decent hoppy backbone with lots of chocolate malt and the hops make an appearance after the swallow. A decently hopped and well priced black IPA.

Bottle - Chocolate with hops on the nose. Jet black light head. Heavy hop profile with a prevaling bitterness, the malt really lost. This would be an OK IPA but it misses as a complex hopped dark.

Bottle shared at the 6th annual Richmond Industry Gathering, 11/27/11. Pours a dark brown color with a medium creamy tan head. Decent head retention. Aroma of roasted malts, earthy notes, herbal notes and citrus. The taste is roasted malts, bitter citrus and herbal hops. Medium-full bodied.

Near black with a big, thick head. Rich chocolatey nose with big c-hop woody and citrus notes. Very appetizing to me. Toasty, with lots of fruit and wood. Pretty strong. Quite good balance. Very functional.

On tap at Flying Saucer. Pours a dark brown with a large tan head that leaves good sticky lacing. Sweet roasted malt and chocolate. Thick mouthfeel with a nice hoppy bite upfront with caramel and citrus. Easy to drink, a good Black IPA from Deschutes.

Bottle from Brewery Creek, Vancouver, 6.9% ABV, bb 12/30/11
Black color, with brownish creamy head. The pungent resiny hop aroma is evident from the moment that the bottle is opened; followed by roasted malts, dark chocolate and some cream. Dry and lean mouthfeel; roasted malt flavor, a bit ashy, with coffee; good but after the aroma some more depth was expected; very strong bitterness, but without special hop qualities, just a lot of resins blending with the bitter roastiness.
Good but not special.

650ml bottle from Brewery Creek Liqour Store, Vancouver, BC
BBE 11/28/11, ABV 6,9% - Pours black with a slight red haze. Massive foamy and bubbly head. Aroma has notes of citrusy hops, smoke, roasted malts and fruits. Taste is roasty and fruity with notes of citrusy hops, smoke, chocolate and coffee. Nice fruity and slightly bitter finish. Smooth, not overly hoppy or roasty. Very well balanced, excellent black IPA.

Dark opaque brown color, good beige head. Citrusy, grassy aroma. Medium-bodied. Front has toasted chocolaty maltyness then citrusy-piney hoppyness. Aftertaste brings coffee. Good Black IPA.
