Can an IPA be black? Semantics aside, this noir version has subtle coffee undertones born of a blend of oats with dark, Munich and crystal malts. What emerges is something deeper, less orthodox, and all its own. After 22 trial runs in our Bend and Portland pubs, we got it right.
Malt: Pale, Crystal, Chocolate, Chocolate Wheat, Black Barley, Flaked Oats, Toasted Oats.
Hops: Northern Brewer, Nugget, Centennial, Amarillo, Cascade, Citra

Bomber pours mahogany with mocha head. The aroma offers up burnt malts, dark roasted coffee and chocolate malts mixing with pine hops and a mild level of sweet citrus hops. The taste is similar with a nice balance of dark roasted coffee, burnt malts and chocolate malts running up against a pleasing load of pine hop bitterness and thin layers of malt sweetened citrus hop flavor and earthy hops. Nice stuff.

Herb-trockener Antrunk. Das Malz verträgt sich gut mit dem Hopfen, auch wenn die Aromen sich gegenseitig abmildern. Der Hopfen erscheint dauerhaft trocken und passend bitter. Etws nach Heu, der Hopfen wird zum Ende aromatischder, das Malz bleibt konstant, auch in seiner Röstigkeit. Vollmundig, süffig, gelungen. 10/12/11/12/12/12

22 oz bottle. Dark, reddish brown, close to black body with a small tan head. Aroma is citric fruity with mild roasted malt. Flavor is light roasted malt, fruity bitter, sweet and a hint of coffee. Moderate and balanced in flavors, medium body and a fine balance. Very pleasant.

Bottle, 22oz. A clear, ruby dark brown beer with a finger-thick beige head. The aroma is citrusy and malty, some roasted notes. Orange peel too. Nice mouthfeel, fine bitterness and a little roased touch. Some alcohol warmth. Long finish where the hops dominates, some roasted, coffeeish flavors too. A nice one that doesn’t impress but is nice and tasteful. 110301

A deep dark IPA with a thick frothy dark brown head. In aroma, nice herbaceous hops over powdery chocolate, quite nice. In mouth, a smooth sweet fruity malt with nice pinhey hops, nutty notes, nice but a bit too dark for me. On tap at Big Dog Winterfest, Jan. 29 2011.

Bottle 65 cl. Courtesy of nicolascage. Pours black and opaque with a creamy light brown head leaving laces. Intense and fresh citrus hops in the finish. Medium body, sweetish hard roasted malt, fresh yet somewhat dusty hops in the finish. 141210
