Hop in the Dark CDA

Deschutes Brewery in Bend, Oregon, United States 🇺🇸

IPA - Black / Cascadian Dark Regular
Score
7.48
ABV: 6.9% IBU: 70 Ticks: 80
Can an IPA be black? Semantics aside, this noir version has subtle coffee undertones born of a blend of oats with dark, Munich and crystal malts. What emerges is something deeper, less orthodox, and all its own. After 22 trial runs in our Bend and Portland pubs, we got it right.
Malt: Pale, Crystal, Chocolate, Chocolate Wheat, Black Barley, Flaked Oats, Toasted Oats.
Hops: Northern Brewer, Nugget, Centennial, Amarillo, Cascade, Citra

Bottle. Almost black with a large light tan head. Aroma of kumquats, pine, grapefruit, a little chocolate. Taste has chocolate and vanilla, mild roast with citrus and pine. The malt side is firm and not very sweet at all. The hop flavours and the bitterness dovetail quite nicely. Not a gimmick, then.

22 fl oz bottle, courtesy of cgarvieuk. Pours dark brown with a huge off-white head. Aroma is roasted malty and fruity hoppy. Smooth fruity, oranges and mild peachy. Lingering fruity and dark malty into the finish.

22oz bottle. Opaque brown-black, rusty beige head. Green hop chocolate aroma, thick and resinous. One of the milder Black IPAs I’ve had, though still a full bodied beer in it’s own right. Steady hop backbone, some citrus, grapefruit immersed in a bitter cocoa richness. Bitter dry chocolate finish lingers. A really enjoyable beer.

On tap at the brewpub/. Black and a small tan bead. Very little roasted aroma just mainstream Hoppines of a pale ale. Some dark roasted flavors but no so much to eclipse the hops

Bottle shared by Matt. Poured black with a dark brown head that dissipated to the edges. Aroma had a lots of pine hops that melded with a less present dark grain note. Flavor began full of pine hops the mellowed in to a bit of a thin dark grain finish.

cheers to Nelson for the share. pours brown, tan head, adding more to the black ipa / cascade dark ale debate. aroma, nicely roasted, malty with ample citrus hops. flavors, nicely balanced, malt is more forward on the palate, adding a light roasted malts and coffee elements quickly followed by nice citrus hops. Just love this melange between the roasty side and fresh piney hops along with the citrus, other one that comes to mind is the Oakshire 30:30.

Bomber from Imbibe Wine. Nose of Floral, citrus, and light piney hops with background hints of chocolate malts. Very dark brown with a medium tan head that lightly laces. Flavor is coffee, bitter chcolate and more bitterness. Nice CDA or as RB puts it Black IPA!
