Can an IPA be black? Semantics aside, this noir version has subtle coffee undertones born of a blend of oats with dark, Munich and crystal malts. What emerges is something deeper, less orthodox, and all its own. After 22 trial runs in our Bend and Portland pubs, we got it right.
Malt: Pale, Crystal, Chocolate, Chocolate Wheat, Black Barley, Flaked Oats, Toasted Oats.
Hops: Northern Brewer, Nugget, Centennial, Amarillo, Cascade, Citra

Bomber. Pours a thin and dark brown with a decent tan head. Chocolate and pine dominate the nose with a little bit of earthiness. Flavor is a pretty compelling mix of chocolate malt (really strong in the early and late plot development) with the pine and resin that dominates the middle palate. It comes across as a little thin at times, but for the most part, this is very nice.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a very dense, thick tan head. Aroma of potent hops (dry hopped to hell) , grapefruit, pine, a touch of malt, and way more hops - nice! Light-bodied; Mild hop flavour at first, a touch of malt (without much balance), some caramel and a touch of dryness and metal near the end. Aftertaste shows more hops, subdued sweetness and a drying taste - no malt or alcohol. Overall, a decent dark IPA, although without the malt backbone to support this one, it is pretty mild and doesn’t show much in the way of body or character. Nice to try, but not my favourite for the style by any means. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from City Beer in San Francisco, California on 29-June-2010, sampled on 27-July-2010 at home in Washington.

Thanks to Rogue for sharing a bottle. The beer pours black with some reddish notes and a medium beige head that recedes steadily. Rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of piney hops, sweet malt and citrus. Medium body with flavors of resiny hops, pine, dark chocolate and malt. The finish is toasted malt and piney hops with a moderately bitter aftertaste. Good all around.

Bottle Pours out a dark brown topped with a tall tan head. Aroma was of piney hops, roast malts, and floral notes. Taste was a very good balance between the huge hop selection and the sweet malts. They did a very nice job rounding this one out.
