Can an IPA be black? Semantics aside, this noir version has subtle coffee undertones born of a blend of oats with dark, Munich and crystal malts. What emerges is something deeper, less orthodox, and all its own. After 22 trial runs in our Bend and Portland pubs, we got it right.
Malt: Pale, Crystal, Chocolate, Chocolate Wheat, Black Barley, Flaked Oats, Toasted Oats.
Hops: Northern Brewer, Nugget, Centennial, Amarillo, Cascade, Citra

Bottle Pours out a dark brown topped with a tall tan head. Aroma was of piney hops, roast malts, and floral notes. Taste was a very good balance between the huge hop selection and the sweet malts. They did a very nice job rounding this one out.

22 oz. bottle, pours black with a beige head. Aroma of hops, roasted malt, coffee and some sweetness. Flavour of hops, bitter coffee, and roasted malt. Excellent brew from Deschutes.

Bomber poured into English pint. Nose is definitely IPAish, with grapefruit being the dominant aroma. There’s some faint roasted malt here, though, hanging in the background. Pours black with reddish tints at the bottom of the glass. Has a large head with awesome retention. Neat decorative lacework is left on the glass. Flavor is total half and half: half being IPA, and half being a dark roasty kind of beer, such as a porter or stout. Taste is sweet and a bit sour and finishes bitter. Mouthfeel is creamy, carbonation is medium. Black IPA or Cascadian Dark Ale, I don’t care what you call it, this is a tasty beer.

(bottle) dark brown with light tan head; aroma - start with strong pine and lychee, then caramel, citrus flavour is pretty dry with just a hint of sweetness, bit of coffee, smoke, long medium bitter finish. Not very complex but quite drinkable.

Bomber from Ben (aka SuzyGreenberg) - thanks a bunch!! Pours really dark brown with ruby sidelights, and a 4 finger tan head. Aromas of citrus over burnt toast. Full body with really frothy/creamy carbonation. Lots of burnt toast (smooth) with lots of citrusy hop. Kind of like a super hoppy stout. Or not. This is very impressive stuff. The finish is bitter from hop and burnt malt. Good stuff.

Bottle with a best after date of 5/29/10. Pours with a deep brown pour and a large brown/khaki head. Aroma of citrus, pine, cookies, bready, rye, barley (cereal), table sugar, dry. Taste is coffee, citrus, rye, orange rind. Medium bubbles, thickish mouthfeel, burnt finish.

I’m not entirely on board the CDA train, yet, but I still think this is a pretty good beer. As for the style, this seems like a strong, hoppy porter to me. There’s some chocolate and caramel, but it’s mostly the tangy, ashy roast flavor that I associate with porters. Hops are medium to strong for a 6.5% abv IPA and show up more in the flavor than aroma. The aroma is actually a bit milder than I expected. On the other hand, the beer is chock full of flavor. It’s quite bitter with spicy pine resin and pungent grapefruit rind. The roasted malt adds further bitterness or, at least, accentuates the hops. Both taste and aroma are balanced between strong malt and hop flavors. The mouthfeel is a tad rough. I could see this beer and CDAs, generally, growing on me, but I’m not quite there yet. Still, it’s a good beer, and I’ll come back to it, one day.

Bottle. Dark mahogony beer with a tan head. Big grapefruit aroma. Grapefruit and light pine flavor with light darker malts. Medium bodied. Good bitterness. Grapefruit and light pine lingers with light caramel and light darker malts.

Leaning more in the stout direction for a black ipa - dark ruby, nearly black pour, with a fizzy but thick tan lace - earthy, woody hops hit the nose first, but there is a fairly strong dose of chocolate, molasses, and roasty character - dry, woody and hoppy up front - medium dry, roasty matls through the middle - finish adds more stout-like sweetness, chocolate, coffee, licorice - all of this compliments the woodiness of the hops pretty well - tasty.

Draught. Black with medium white head. Very hoppy aroma, citrus and resin. Piney flavour,, more fruitiness. Hoppy finish. This was almost too hoppy.
