This Japanese Classic Ale is a recreation of the first Japanese beer made in the Edo period. Please enjoy the Japanese taste, matured in cedar barrels like the old IPA style method from England. bottle-conditioned IPA. Chinook, Fuggles, and Kent Goldings hops are used.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured an orange-copper color with a huge orange-white head. The aroma was sweet, fruity, peppery and woody which reminded me of tequila. Complex on the nose but a bit faint. The flavor was dry, very tart and bitter with a tangy and fruity undertone and a lightly peppery and woody finish again reminiscent of tequila. The finish was long tart, fruity and peppery tequila. Interesting.

Bottle. Pours a kind of scuzzy looking amber with a fizzy head and lots of bubbles stuck to the side of the glass. Aromas have a funky edge to them with a pretty good mix of citrus, wood and booze. Flavor mixes together cedar, caramel, citrus hops, pear, rust and a bit of funkiness. This was pretty good and interesting, but it is WAY overpriced for what you get in the bottle.

Pours with a large, off-white head that fades over an orange body with decent lace. Aroma of mothballs, booze, banana esters, caramel, and light hops. Taste of caramel and ceder, light hops as well. Slightly fizzy. Weird beer.

Cloudy golden brown, thin tan head. Aroma of orange/citrus. Tastes of cinnamon and clove, dry and a bit hoppy, with lemon and pepper coming in late. Haven’t had anything like this since Tolly Cobbold’s IPA from Ipswich, which hasn’t been brewed in about 10 years. Worth seeking out.

Bottled. Hazy amber, rich firm head. Strong perfumy cedar aroma. Medium sweet and medium bodied Densely malty with this very evident and unique woody cedar character. Fruity, yet elegant with piney bitter finish. Interesting, unique and mindblowingly tasty!

Bottled. Complex malty nose and rich malt flavors: cedar, chocolate, caramel, nuts, plus a bit of citrus and dark fruits. Good citrus, floral, hops all the way providing excellent balance. Dry finish with hops and cedar. Rather sweet and malt-dominated but complex and well-balanced. The sugi barrels add a nice, complicated touch.

Magnum bottle shared by hogfodder with after4ever and myself on 3/20/08. This was the 2002 Vintage of the Classic Ale. According to the label, this was aged in an oak barrel, as opposed to Cedar cask for the usual Classic Ale. Pour is hazy basketball orange, with a fluffy white head. Aroma of sour, floral and some dirty cardboard. Taste is great out of the gate with big flowery hops, oak wood, and nice bright fruit sourness. The taste falls apart a bit mid palate, and then begins to show its age. I can imagine this was excellent fresh. Thanks for sharing this rarity Rick!

Poured a hazy orange with an off white head that quicky disipated. Funky aroma. Peppery and ginger ale? I can’t quite put my finer on it. Flavor was also peppery and woody with an earthy aftertaste. Not bad, but different. Worth a try.

bottle - Pours copper with a thin head and an aroma of citrus hops and some caramel malt. The flavor is pretty well balanced between the hops and malt though is more mild, especially on the hops, than I expected from an IPA. It’s medium bodied, has a fairly mild finish, and is certainly easy to drink. It could stand to be more assertive though and given that the bar where I found it charges $7 a bottle, I won’t revisit it anytime soon.

11.2 oz bottle from cbkschubert (I think); nose of light flowery hops, some wood which must be cedar, but not the strength of a cedar chest, and sweetness from the malts; lightly hazed copper with a medium beige head; flavor of caramel, with somenectariney fruitiness and some light hop bitterness. I’d love to have a case of this for a stronger session brew!
