Julebryg-style dark rye ale

Don’t worry, we’re pronouncing it wrong, too. Rugbrød, the classic Danish dark rye bread, inspired our 2018 brew of the same name, which in turn sparked this 2022 rebrew. Brewed with three types of rye malt, this robust brown ale showcases the earthy, spicy character of the grain, balancing perfectly with bready, nutty, slightly roasty notes from barley malts.

Draft from Ginger Man NYC. Poured a mild darkish brown, somewhat of a creamy head that laced the glass. Caramel, dark fruits, kind of a smooth mouthfeel. Pretty excellent.

750 ml bottle poured into a Bruery tulip. No bottle date but bought in July 2013. Assuming this is a 2012 bottle if it was a Fall/Winter release. Dark brown with a finger of light tan head. Aromas of dark fruit, caramel, Christmas spices, light rye. Tastes of dark fruit, caramel, spices, some rye, raisins. Medium body with a dry finish.

Bottle, large sample. Dark brown color, medium brown frothy head. Aroma of roast, bit mocha, cookie, spicy rye, some coffee. Bit sweet cookie and biscuit in taste, grainy and slight spicy rye, and roasty and chocolatey bitterness. Chewy palate. I liked it.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Max’s place. Thanks Tom L. Brown. Aroma of malt, caramel, spicy rye bread and toast. Sweet flavor with caramel, rye bread, a bit spicy, toast, molasses, some fruitiness and a slightly drier finish. Medium-bodied. Not my thing.

Bottle at home. Pours deep reddish brown, sweet toffee malts, light bitter, light peppery spice. Delicious.
