Wrapped in a red cloak, this aromatic and complex beer reveals a scent of spice, orange and malt, followed by caramelized notes and a finish as hot as dying embers.
It evokes the Quebec legend of La Chasse-galerie – or flying canoe – which tells the tale of men who would risk anything for a night of fun, even making a pact with the devil.

Bottle. Hazy bronze, beige head that rapidly become just a rim and 1mm layer. Berries and cherries, some earthy aromas. Inviting. Quite carbonated and light. Some overt alcohol. Sweetness balance with citrus. Dry finish. [3.5] A little warmer (14C), poured into a tulip rather than a Trappist glass. Nice head now and perhaps the palate is improved by the slightly warmer temperature - but mostly I’m just liking this family of styles more. [4/10: 3.8] Head fades and returns briefly with a swirl. Quite carbonated but works for the mouthfeel. Dark and dried fruits with quite severe drying finish.

One of the best examples of a lighter bottle-conditioned ale you’ll find. Great fruity notes, cloudy look and texture, great mouthfeel. Plenty of alcohol and unfortunately it does come through in the aromas. It’s a Unibroue classic and also easy to find.

Copper pour, big off-white head shows moderate persistence.Aroma is very complex if you search for it, with cherries, vanilla, chocolate, spicy cloves, dark malts, wheat, yeast, light alcohol, and candi sugar sweetness. Very appetising.Flavour doesn’t impress quite as much, with sweet toasty malts, belgian yeast, spicy phenols and some very slight alcohol.Very high carbonation adds to a nice creamy mouthfeel. Some pleasant alcoholic heat on the palate.

Bottle: Cloudy brown with a small beige head. Light Belgian spices in the aroma along with yeast, bananas, and a bready character. Tastes right on par with the aroma. Dry and lingering spices in the finish. Ehh, not overly stimulating.

bottle, Auchan Illkirch-Graffenstaden, 2007. Hazy amber colour, large white head. Malty nose. Full-bodied, malty and very fruity with a touch of caramel. Pleasantly hoppy in the lingering finish. Delicious.

Big foamy looking head that sticks around for quite a while. Body is a cloudy (muddy) brown color. Aroma of cloves and other spices along with a chock full of fruit smells, mostly banana. Bitterswwet front that melts into sweetness and then brings out a dry and bitter aftertaste. Banana taste is in there, along with a pleasant amount of hops. Pretty nice beer overall, worth trying by all people.
