Dark Belgian wheat ale.

Import series volume 3. Dark Belgian Wheat Ale. Brewed with good friend, Urbain Coutteau of De Struise Brouwers. Urbain describes this work as "Dark chess-nut coloured ale with a nice steady off-white head. Aroma is all about finesse, loads of blossoms and spring flowers. The mouth-feel is refined, playful and complex with Saison like peppery flavours. Soft nutty after taste with a bite."

33 cl bottle @ home, no BBE info
Rather complex aroma is sweet with strawberries, pears, some vanilla, hints of sugar and ash. Flavour is sweetish, 1slightly sour and tart with burnt sugar and peppery spices. Sticky palate. Some alcohol starts to come through as this warms up. Interesting brew, although a bit too spicy.

Bottle bought at Ølbutikken in April this year. Dark brown with a huge tan head. Aroma of dried fruit, pepper, yeast, and sugar. The taste on the dry side with nuts, pepper, sugar, dried fruit and yeast. Light body with notes of alcohol. Not a bad beer but neither excellent.

bottle 33cl from Struise beershop.

330ml bottle from Cracked Kettle

Pours dark brown with a large foamy head. Aroma has notes of caramel malts, spices and hints of floral notes and sourness. Taste is quite sweet and malty with notes of caramel, spices and floral notes. Some hints of sourness. Full bodied, warming finish. Not quite as heavy as other dark belgian ales, even though it has 10%. Nice, a bit unusual but tasty.

Bottle. Pours with a deep mahogany hue with garnet highlights. Massive creamy tan head with good retention and lace. Powerful aromas can be picked up at a distance. Up close there is a rich malt note, orange blossom, nutty, a bit spicy (phenol and possibly actual spice) and some dried fruit and pear esters. Quite rich too, persimmon pudding, and fruit cake. Chocolate, figs, and a noticeable alcohol punch as well. Flavors are rich and malty. Lots of dark fruits, plums. A bit nutty and roasty as well (to the point of being unpleasant). Pencil shavings. A bit of a grassyness and yeast note that reminds me of some of the bigger Fantome beers. Floral, bright. Alcohol is there, but very well integrated. Jammy. Medium to lively carbonation. Bright, vinous, slightly warming. Creamy and medium bodied with a rich (but well attenuated) finish. Pretty tasty beer (probably deserves higher numbers than I gave it).

Bottle from The Davis Beer Shoppe in Davis, CA. Pours very dark brown/black with a fizzy transient yellow/beige head. Aroma is mixed flowers and spice - but it strongly suggests peppery cola. Med body. Flavor is spicy/peppery with a greasy/nutty background. It actually has some barnyard and barring appearance could fool me into thinking it’s a spicy saison. With a bit of cola. Or chocolate. A nice drink.

Had this at Alvinne CBF 2011. Color: Light brown / dark orange, hazy. Smells like a bright red strawberry-candy. Taste strawberry, banana, sweet. Not bad but certanly not my favorite either.
