One of the great things about collaboration brew days is the conversations we have while we’re brewing. Here are some of the best of the Q (and some A) resulting from our collaboration brew day on December 17:
Q: Do we have to brew today? I’ve got tickets to the Chargers game and Foreigner is playing the tailgate party!
Q: What the heck are you thinking? Getting three of San Diego’s most hop enamored brewers together and brewing a scotch ale!? One of the least hoppy styles in existence!?
Q: How long does it take to dump 10,000 pounds of grain by hand?
A: About 4 hours!
Q: How long does it take to weigh out 25 pounds of hops?
A: About 4 minutes!
Q: Are you intimidated by Chuck’s beard?
A: It’s all right, but come back when he looks like Billy Gibbons or Santa Claus. He’s got nothing yet on Cecil.
Q: Did you figure in the extract from the brown sugar when calculating the recipe?
A: Ummm, hey! How about we increase the target gravity from 19°P to 20°P, everyone good with that?
Q: What are the wort IBUs? 30!? You mean 130, don’t you? No?

Bottle. Pours a dark amber color with a small off-white head. Has a fruity malty spicy aroma with weak hints of dark fruit. Sweetish malty spicy caramel and dark fruit flavor. Has a fruity malty spicy caramel finish.

Single 12oz. bottle, $3.50 @ Binny’s. Pours a foamy brown head over an iced-tea brown body. Just a slight haze. Not much aroma being offered up through these bubbles. But the taste is right up front with Malty McMaltster. A chewy caramel malt with very little peat, alcohol in the form of a pleasant, slightly warming thread of brandy. I’m so attuned to sniffing for hops from a West Coast beer that their lack kind of stymies me. But I’ve got a big beer that’s going to start tingling my toes now, so I’ll get over it.

12 oz bottle-thanks Justin for sharing-pours a thin tan head and copper color. Aroma is medium malt-peat/some caramel. Taste is medium malt-peat/some caramel, some spice hops.

12oz bottle pours a nice clear dark ruby red amber with mocha head. The aroma has a nice mix of roasted malts, prune puree, sugar sweet dark cherry candy and faint leathery tobacco off in the background. The taste is smooth with smooth sweet ripe dark cherries, prunes, sweet malts, tootsie roll and a bit of molasses. It gets a touch earthy to midway and into the finish. I think this was just what they were going for. It isn’t a bold crazy brew but smooth rich and yummy. I like it.

12oz bottle from Supermarket liquors in Fort Collins
Appearance: Pours clear dark brown/amber with a small off-white head that dissipates quickly with very little lacing
Aroma: Toffee, sweet caramel and fruity
Taste: Sweet caramel, toasted malts and sugary
A nice scotch ale.

Tasty Scotch Ale, not a classic, but a heavy, boozy treat nonetheless. The beer isn’t overly sweet; thank the lord for that, since American-made Scotch Ales many times resemble bottles of pancake syrup. The malts are semisweet, like good SIngle Malt should be, yet the peppery alcohol and minor hop bitterness keep things nice and dry. There’s a lack of depth of flavor that some age will surely provide, but, for now, this beer drinks well, a little hot but a surprisingly underhopped brew by West Coast hop barons.

12 oz. bottle, pours dark reddish brown with a tiny, quickly vanishing head. Very malty aroma of caramel, some dark fruits and syrup. Flavour is of caramel malts, dark fruits, maple syrup and medium sweetness. Quite a nice collaboration, out of character for the usual hoppiness of these brewers.

Bottle. Poured a slightly hazy brown with a slight amber hue and a tan head that dissipated slowly to the edges. Aroma has a nice sweet bread/caramel note that was backed by a hint of alcohol and darker grains. Flavor was similar with sweet grains and a light caramel note as well as a hint of sweet bread.

I was very pleasantly surprised by this collaboration. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark red-brown color with a medium sized soapy beige head that left a bit of lacing. The aorma was sweet caramel, nut, cherries and raisins. The flavor was a marvelously complexs mix of sweet caramel malts, cherries, nut, vanilla, tobacco, dry spices and wood. The finish was long and malty with lingering wood, tobacco and nut. Fairly full bodied. Excellent.

Bottle from a trade with cbkschubert. Pours dark reddish brown color with thin tan head. Aromas of caramel, dark fruits, molasses and some alcohol. Sweet raisin flavor with some caramel and alcohol with a hint of smoke. Medium body moderate carbonation. Thanks Craig.
