One of the great things about collaboration brew days is the conversations we have while we’re brewing. Here are some of the best of the Q (and some A) resulting from our collaboration brew day on December 17:
Q: Do we have to brew today? I’ve got tickets to the Chargers game and Foreigner is playing the tailgate party!
Q: What the heck are you thinking? Getting three of San Diego’s most hop enamored brewers together and brewing a scotch ale!? One of the least hoppy styles in existence!?
Q: How long does it take to dump 10,000 pounds of grain by hand?
A: About 4 hours!
Q: How long does it take to weigh out 25 pounds of hops?
A: About 4 minutes!
Q: Are you intimidated by Chuck’s beard?
A: It’s all right, but come back when he looks like Billy Gibbons or Santa Claus. He’s got nothing yet on Cecil.
Q: Did you figure in the extract from the brown sugar when calculating the recipe?
A: Ummm, hey! How about we increase the target gravity from 19°P to 20°P, everyone good with that?
Q: What are the wort IBUs? 30!? You mean 130, don’t you? No?

On tap at The Petrol Station. Pours a dark amber with a small white quickly diminishing head. The aroma is a raisin malt and smoke. Medium mouthfeel with a toasty malt and smoke with a dry smoky finish. A decent scotch ale.

Bottle. Pours a medium brown with orange highlights and a thin head. Aromas are a cloying mix of grapes/wine, brown sugar, figs and damp soil. I’m already a little bit put off... but I remember now why I normally don’t stray into the scotch ale category often. Flavor is a sickeningly sweet mess of sugar and wine-like fruitiness. It just sits wrong with me and I’m renewing my dislike for the style.

Purchased as an impulse buy at the mega Whole Foods in Chicago, IL; enjoyed after a nice spring day riding my bike around the city. Appearance is dark amber / caramel with a bit of redness like dark raspberries, with a thin somewhat off white head that’s thin. Aroma of caramel malt, but there’s a definite crispness to it, also has a nice yeasty backing, somewhat soft. Taste is very smooth, just a very slight crispness to it and it has that \"English ale\" vibe of no bitterness, definitely syrupy but not in a \"cheap\" way, just feels like there’s some sort of maple syrup added to the mix. Definitely little carbonation, also some sweetness and mostly malty. There’s a lot going on and it’s good.

bottle pours dark amber with lots of dark red hues and a medium tan head. Aroma is very fruity, dark red berries, caramel malt and light pine. Flavor is bitter toffee, again fruity yeast and a little hint of peat in a lightly peppery finish. I like this alot.

Bottle @ hotelroom, Denver. Pours dark brown with a small fast dismished white head. Aroma of roasted malt, whiskey, peat, chocolate and caramel notes. Taste is sweet chocolate, bready malt, peat, light whiskey, port, some alchohol. Medium to full body, soft carbonation. Nice one. 050411

12oz bottle from BigBeerTweeter. Thanks! Pours a hazy, deep brown with a thin, creamy, white head. Nose is sweet, raisins, a touch boozy, some brown malts, some tropical fruit. Flavor is nice, a surprising chocolate note, grainy bread, brown sugar, a little bit of caramel apple. Finish is nice,a little thick but fairly smooth. Not an offensive or aggressive scotch ale by any stretch. Straight forward for the style.

12 ounce bottle into snifter. Pours slightly hazy dark red color with a 1 finger foamy off white head with decent retention that reduces to a thin lacing cap. Aromas of dark fruits, brown sugar sugar, spices, caramel, and some light bourbon. Taste of caramel, dark fruits, molasses, toasted malt and some bourbon. Almost no bitterness noticed on the finish. Fairly dry finish, but there is some lingering tastes on the finish of caramel, roasted flavors, and light bourbon. No alcohol really noticed at all except for a light warming on the finish, plus the bourbon flavor. Very smooth for its alcohol content and has well balanced flavors as well. Has a medium-full body and medium carbonation. Overall some impressive stuff, definitely enjoyed this one.
