When our old friends Toshi Ishii and Bryan Baird approached us about brewing something special for Japan relief efforts, we of course jumped at the opportunity. We created this very special IPA, brewed with 100% Maris Otter Malt and Belgian candi sugar. Once we decided to tie it all together with the addition of Japanese Sencha green tea in a dry hop, the rest of the recipe came together easily. We included hops that we believed would blend well with the tea flavors, and we went non-traditional, at least in the sense of American IPAs. After bittering with Warrior hops, we used Crystal and New Zealand Pacifica for flavor. And then for the first dry hop, we again used Crystal and Pacifica, and added a brand new hop variety, Aramis, from the Alsace region of France. Then we went all Japanese for the second dry-hop, with Sorachi Ace whole leaf hops, and the Sencha tea. Itβs always fun to use new ingredients and new hop varieties, and for that, I say to Toshi and Bryan: βDomo arigato!β

12 ounce bottle - a green tea double IPA? - sure, why the fuck not? - hazy glowing orange - thick, sudsy lace - nose is mostly the dank, piney, thick hoppiness you expect from Stone - nice aromatics, though - flavor explodes with grapefruit and pine - intense bitterness - the tea come in late, and fairly strong, making the beer taste more like a can of hoppy Arizona Iced Tea - dry, bitter finish, with quit a bit of alcohol presence - messy, but okay.

Bottle. Pours with a muddy golden hued body and a large, foamy, slightly green tinged off-white head. Aromas are a bit dank, tropical fruit hoppy, a bit herbal as well. Slight green tea ice cream nose, a hint of pine. Minimal esters, minimal malt profile, a bit of fusel. Flavors of are bitter, a bit tannic. An odd grassy flavor towards the finish. Lemon, grassy, herbal, lightly fruity (berries maybe?). Odd hopping, lingering bitterness. Medium to lively bubbles. Some alcohol. Perhaps a bit messy.
