Vichtenaar is a beer that is brewed on the basis of deep-roasted malts, spicy hops, fruity yeast and soft water pumped from a well with a depth of 172 meters. After the main fermentation and the second ripening, the Vichtenaar undergoes a third fermentation in oak feeds for a period of several months. The large upright oak barrels have a capacity varying between 5000 and 25000 liters.
Vichtenaar is a Flemish Red-Brown ale: a traditional and typical beer for West Flanders. The taste of Vichtenaar can be described as slightly acidic and complex and this due to the long fermentation in the oak foeder. The ruddy taste of Vichtenaar makes it particularly thirst-quenching. Vichtenaar is the oldest still brewed Flemish Red-Brown ale.

Bottled. Clear ruby color, short head. Aroma of slight oak, tart fruit, some malt. Sourish taste, bit sticky. Very typical flemish sour ale, bit dry and oaky. Though quite soft compared to american sours, as always.

Bottle. Has a dark brown body with ruby highlights and a one finger fizzy head. Aromas are punky and sour with and earthy character. Vinegar sourness with nice fruit (pie cherries?) and an almost salty presence in the flavor. Nice and I was jonesing for a sour ale lately, so this really hits the spot.

Bottle. Deep brown in colour with a big, off-white head. Slightly sour aromas of malt, fruit and oak. Flavours were tart, with some more wood, a hint of vinegar and green fruit. Very thirst quenching.

Bottle @ Sour ale Tasting - DOE Holstebro. Clear medium to dark amber color with a average, frothy - creamy, good lacing, mostly lasting, light beige head. Aroma is moderate malty, roasted, berry, raisin, plum, date, vinegar sour. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate acidic - vinegar with a average to long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. ;o) (250308)

Re-rate 11/7/11: Bottle shared at a tasting at Dancing Camel. Clear deep red color. Aroma of cherries, berries, oak, lactic notes and a bit of caramel. Sweet & sour flavor with cherries, a bit of berries, some oak, caramel hints and light lactic notes. Medium-bodied. Refreshing and really tasty. 8/3/8/3/16=3.8
(2/27/08) Bottle at Zolder in Bruges. A reddish brown beer. Very woody and earthy aroma with some malt, fruits and a bit of caramel. A really nice flavor with a great balance between malty, somewhat sugary, sweetness and a funky oak sourness. Medium-bodied. Delicious and highly drinkable.8/4/8/3/16=3.9

[i] [b] Bottle, many thanks to Glen for this one, cheers mate [/i] [/b] Pours nice soft red colour with toff white bubbly head. wonderful aroma soft sourness very cherry like but really addictive. Lovely soft sour tang to this beer, tastes like it’s been well aged, some cherries again maybe and also some slightly sour oaky and vanilla flavours, very good beer.

Bottle, 5.1%. Good sweet and acidic aroma. Clear brown colour. Small light brown head. The flavour is OK acidic with some sugary sweetness and a little metal. Quite refreshing.

RB BE #400: 25 cL bottle. Pours clear and golden amber to deep maghoni with a creamy/crispy light brown head. Cherry fruity, light woody and dried fruity aroma. Flavourful, slight woody, dried fruity yet fresh from the cherries. Sweet, yet not overly so. Finish holds a nice dryish and very controlled sour note to a distinct fruity note. Nice

Thanks Nuts! Nice dark presentation with ruby tinge showing thru. Sour aroma. Initial taste of old mixed fruit sitting in an old farmouse wooden barrel. Delectable carbonation. Intruiging sour flavor borders on bitter but never gets there. Yes, this is beer! Finish leaves you wanting more. No hint of any alky in this brew. Very much like gueuze lambic.

Deep ruby red with a thin off-white head. Reminded me of grape juice. Powerful aroma of tart cherry, vinegar, and port. I do love these sour ales. Flavor is sweet cherry, fruit, some sour berries, wood. Mildly sour finish. Body is well carbonated and a tab thin. I generally prefer more sourness in the flavor than this one offers up, but an enjoyable ale none the less.
