Vichtenaar is a beer that is brewed on the basis of deep-roasted malts, spicy hops, fruity yeast and soft water pumped from a well with a depth of 172 meters. After the main fermentation and the second ripening, the Vichtenaar undergoes a third fermentation in oak feeds for a period of several months. The large upright oak barrels have a capacity varying between 5000 and 25000 liters.
Vichtenaar is a Flemish Red-Brown ale: a traditional and typical beer for West Flanders. The taste of Vichtenaar can be described as slightly acidic and complex and this due to the long fermentation in the oak foeder. The ruddy taste of Vichtenaar makes it particularly thirst-quenching. Vichtenaar is the oldest still brewed Flemish Red-Brown ale.

Bottled 250ml. -Reddish/brown coloured, small to medium off-white head, very sour nose. Sweet and sour overripe fruits taste with notes of wood and metal. Big yeasty sediment at the bottom. To be honest Iβve expected better brew.

Tart, sweet-and-sour nose, lots of dark fruit and some brown sugar and oak. Very sweet, yet the sourness balances it nicely. A great contrast of flavors. Fine stuff.

Bottle: Poured a deep hazy reddish color ale with a medium foamy head with OK retention and some lacing. Aroma of sweet cherries and light sour and oaky notes. Taste is also dominated by tasty oak notes with a light lingering sour note with some sweet cherries. I thought the bit was slightly overly sweet but oak notes were just about perfect, carbonation might have been a bit low. Well done.

330 ml bottle from Bottle Barn BB 28-12-07; Nose is softly tart, mildly oaky, with molasses and nutmeg, finishing with a soy sauce note; clear brown with a medium beige head; flavor is mildly sweet raisins with spices. Finish is slightly sweet, not what I expected of a sour ale! Very mildly sourish!
