Vichtenaar is a beer that is brewed on the basis of deep-roasted malts, spicy hops, fruity yeast and soft water pumped from a well with a depth of 172 meters. After the main fermentation and the second ripening, the Vichtenaar undergoes a third fermentation in oak feeds for a period of several months. The large upright oak barrels have a capacity varying between 5000 and 25000 liters.
Vichtenaar is a Flemish Red-Brown ale: a traditional and typical beer for West Flanders. The taste of Vichtenaar can be described as slightly acidic and complex and this due to the long fermentation in the oak foeder. The ruddy taste of Vichtenaar makes it particularly thirst-quenching. Vichtenaar is the oldest still brewed Flemish Red-Brown ale.

25cl bottle from Bierkompass.de. Poured reddish brown with a thin bubbly white head. Aroma is sour with cherry notes. Flavor is similar but turns sweet quite quickly. Spices and sweet cherries, leading to a dry finish. High carbonation, feeling bit fizzy. Really enjoyable though.

Smells of sour grains, barley, caramel, we’re approaching complexity here. Pours with a nice head, and a dark brown-burgundy body with plenty of fog. Flavour has nice notes of wood, malt, red wine, pancakes with syrup - excellent! Leaves you with a soft lingering finish. This is good stuff, and may be my new favourite style.

Bottle thanks to drowland. Pours a clear reddish amber. Nose is sweaty sock and feet. Taste is slight sour, some funk and foot.

Medium light brown head. Deep red body with carbonation. Fruity wooden vinegary aroma with spicy cinnamon notes. Sweet-acidic fruity vinegary wooden taste with spicy milky cinnamon notes. Light body. Mild mouthfeel. Dryish wooden soft metal aftertaste with fruity vinegar notes. Delicate and balanced. Vinuous, sugary, and complex. Very nice, and highly drinkable. GF-approved. (0.25l bottle, Bacchus Cornelius, Bruges.)

11.2 oz. bottle, pours dark amber / brown with a beige head. Cherries, toffee and brown sugar on the nose. Flavour of sweet and sour cherries, more towards the sweet, and vinegar. Very nice.

Sour cherry nose, moderate strength. Ruby brown, clear, medium beige head, some lacing. Sweet and sour cherry flavor, certainly not excessively sour. Spider web and must finish. Mustier and sweeter than most sours, but a very tasty brew.

23rd July 2008. Clear dark red brown beer. Slightly sour in the Duchesse Du Bourgogne mode but this is tamer and much sweeter. Sweet and sour semi dry finish with some coca cola flavours. Refreshing.

25cl bottle from Beers of Europe. Pours a chesnut brown colour with a reddish sheen. Beige long lasting head. Vinous nose. Aromas of sour cherries, toffee, strawberries. Quite tart. Flavours of sour cherries, red wine vinegar, stewed apples. Finishes fruity and sweet with only a hint of sourness. Excellent sour ale almost as good as Rodenbach’s wonderful grand cru.

Keeping up the sour ticking, have had this many times over the years and have always found it to be an average traditional Flanders Red. I have not been a fan of Verhaeghe sour character. This rating is for a particular bottle shared by someone at a Blvd tasting (was it Eric, whoever it is thanks). This is BB 13-10-06, so 5-6 years old. Pours with a clear yet dark brown color. Almost no head to speak of. Aroma is a bit sweet, dirty, rotten cherry with a brown earthy balsamic vinegar. Flavor is more like earthy prune juice and earthy cherry. Light and easy drinking and absolutely no sign of age. No reason to age it though it seems, nothing new emerges.
