Vichtenaar is a beer that is brewed on the basis of deep-roasted malts, spicy hops, fruity yeast and soft water pumped from a well with a depth of 172 meters. After the main fermentation and the second ripening, the Vichtenaar undergoes a third fermentation in oak feeds for a period of several months. The large upright oak barrels have a capacity varying between 5000 and 25000 liters.
Vichtenaar is a Flemish Red-Brown ale: a traditional and typical beer for West Flanders. The taste of Vichtenaar can be described as slightly acidic and complex and this due to the long fermentation in the oak foeder. The ruddy taste of Vichtenaar makes it particularly thirst-quenching. Vichtenaar is the oldest still brewed Flemish Red-Brown ale.

Bottle. Clear darker amber to brown colour. Almost no head to speak of. Aroma of sour apples, caramel, cherries, wood, Taste initially mostly sweet, turns sour after a moment. Pleasant lightly sour and dry finish. I can indeed imagine drinking this in hot summer months with great pleasure.

At a tasting, thanks DSG, small stable head, clear dark red colour, aroma of cherries with oxidised notes and a touch of rubber, fruity flavour that is a bit artificial and some metalic notes, medium sourness with a light sweetness, light but long sour aftertaste. Quite nice but a bit flat.

03/10/2011 330ml bottle. Ambrata molto carica, quasi bruna, con riflessi coca cola e rubino, schiuma biancastra, non abbondantissima e poco persistente. Al naso aromi di ciliegia, uva, caramello. In bocca è dolciastra, caramellata, zuccherosa, appiccicaticcia, quindi appena acidula, poco complessa e alla lunga stucchevole. Corpo medio-basso, carbonazione abbondante. Molto deludente, specie in confronto alla sontuosa Duchesse De Bourgogne .

Amber to brown colour. Head quickly gone. Smells sour, wood and yeast. Tastes sweet with sourish aftertaste, quite a unique combo. Good carbo, medium body.

Bottle @ home, shared with Dutchdrebus and Thompson. Clear dark copper / light red color, small off-white head. Smell sour, not much more. Taste sweet, sour, lightly musty. Low body, low carbo.

D’Vines, DC 11.2oz ($5): Pours a reddish brown with a loose and quickly dissipating off-white head. Aroma got some cherry, some wood, and a hint or two of vinegar. Taste has a pretty mild sour bite in comparison to other sours. Leaves some lingering aftertaste. Vinegar is there, but it doesn’t give you the same kind of mouthfeel (which is one of the things I like about intense sours). A little bit on the sweet side, but well balanced with the sours. Good mouthfeel and well-proportioned. Not the greatest sour, but good nonetheless.

33cl pours a hazy, nearly opaque, deep mahogany brown with a thin, creamy, lacing off white head. Nose of cherries, a little cough syrup, a little watermelon Jolly Rancher, some throat lozenge. Flavor is better but not great, sweet, cherry candies, a little vanilla, some malt, some artificial candy sweetness. Medium bodied, slick, sweet finish. Needed a lot more tartness. More acid to cut the sweetness would have been great.

25 cl. bottle@home: dark brown/red with a tanned head, smells like cherries & some wood, taste is heavy on tart cherries, grapes, some coca-cola, wood, some sweetness with brown sugar, touch of vinegar but more like an afterthought, there is very little vinegar in here, medium body, overall very nice

Sampled from an 11.2 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark brown color with plum highlights and a medium sized creamy tan head that left some lacing. The beer was delightfully complex on the nose with notes of tart sour cherries, sourdough bread, port wine and nougat. The flavor was tart with a moderate presence of sourdough bread and nougat followed by red wine, cherries and wochestershire sauce. The finish was long and tart with lingering cherry, nougat and vanilla. Excellent.

Bottle at Brickskeller, shared with Collin. Dark brown, small beige head. Aroma of dark fruits, plums, etc. Taste is oak, sourballs, toffee. Somewhat reminiscent of the old Rodenbach before they sold out. Nice.
