Vichtenaar is a beer that is brewed on the basis of deep-roasted malts, spicy hops, fruity yeast and soft water pumped from a well with a depth of 172 meters. After the main fermentation and the second ripening, the Vichtenaar undergoes a third fermentation in oak feeds for a period of several months. The large upright oak barrels have a capacity varying between 5000 and 25000 liters.
Vichtenaar is a Flemish Red-Brown ale: a traditional and typical beer for West Flanders. The taste of Vichtenaar can be described as slightly acidic and complex and this due to the long fermentation in the oak foeder. The ruddy taste of Vichtenaar makes it particularly thirst-quenching. Vichtenaar is the oldest still brewed Flemish Red-Brown ale.

25cl bottle thanks to allmyvinyl. Appearance - another gusher. Not having good odds with this today. Brown and cloudy with a decent head. Nose - sour dark cherries maybe sour plums. Maybe a hint of wood tannins. Taste - tangy prunes and cherries. Palate - medium bodied with a really tight and compressed texture which leads into a long tangy refreshing finish. Overall - a lovely sour. So well balanced.

Diverse Flaschen (25 cl). - Dunkles Rotbraun.

From a 33 cl bottle shared at home. Pours fairly clear reddish brown with a massive ecru head. Aroma of tart apple and cherry. Flavors of raisin and green apple, with some sweetness. Medium bodied with high carbonation. Sweet finish.

Bottle at home. It pours deep red-brown with a small beige head. The nose is jam, cherry, wood, earth and light spice. The taste is tangy cherry, cherryade, lemon, light wood, faint vinegar and jam. Medium body, moderate carbonation and slightly sticky mouth-feel. Pretty decent all-round tangy fruity sour beer.

11.2 oz bottle. Aroma consists of dark fruits, caramel, funk. Pours dark brown but looks clear ruby red in the light. Has a large cream-colored head with good retention. Taste is sweet, tart and acidic, but not mouth-puckering. The oak is noticeable in flavor along with dark fruity flavors. Tasty and refreshing.

4/V/2012 - 25cl bottle from De Hopduvel (Gent) @ a BBQ - BB: no print on bottle or cap (2012-468)
Clear cola like beer, no head. Aroma: sweet caramel, fruity, cola, little sour, some rotten fruits. MF: good carbon, light body. Taste: pretty sour start, some apple skin, cola, pretty bitter as well, some rotten fruits, overripe banana. Aftertaste: tart, pretty bitter, bit dirty, apple skin. Not the best sour, I have a feeling this might have been past it's date, but if the brewery doesn't put the date on the bottle, I can't tell. Too bad...

25cl bottle.
