Vichtenaar is a beer that is brewed on the basis of deep-roasted malts, spicy hops, fruity yeast and soft water pumped from a well with a depth of 172 meters. After the main fermentation and the second ripening, the Vichtenaar undergoes a third fermentation in oak feeds for a period of several months. The large upright oak barrels have a capacity varying between 5000 and 25000 liters.
Vichtenaar is a Flemish Red-Brown ale: a traditional and typical beer for West Flanders. The taste of Vichtenaar can be described as slightly acidic and complex and this due to the long fermentation in the oak foeder. The ruddy taste of Vichtenaar makes it particularly thirst-quenching. Vichtenaar is the oldest still brewed Flemish Red-Brown ale.

Pours a dark brown, almost garnet color with a diminishing, light brown head. Sour apples, rotting fruit aroma tempered by some sweetness. Tart start with a building spicy sweetness towards the finish. Smooth, quite nice.

Bottled. Dark amber coloured, small beige head. Sour grape and cherry aroma, almost red-wineish. Flavour is sour grapefruit, cherry, apple and some vanilla. Almost like a more sour Madeira-wine. Some wooden hints also all the way through as it gets warmer. Redwineish aftertaste. Wellbalanced, but sadly a quite thin palate.

Pours deep mahogany into a tulip. Conglomerate 1/2 inch tan head does not recede. Sour cherry and balsamic notes. Lively with slight tart cherry but mostly vinegar notes. Abrupt vinegar finish.

Bier rouge: Red brown with little white head. The carbonation is lively. The aroma and taste is sour/sweet from vinegar/oak and cherries. Easy to taste that this is from the same brewery as Duchesse de bourgogne. Great!

Clear ruby color with a small ring of bubbles - vinous aroma, with touches of oak, cherries, earthy/musty tones - high, mouth-tingling carbonation - somewhat tart up front, mellowing to reveal a light, bready malt, with plum and cherry tagging along - a little thin in the finish - some grain coming in - not the best of flemish browns, but nice to drink anyway.

Reddish-amber colour. Woody, balsamic aroma. The flavour is fairly sweet, with light balsamic acidity, fruitiness and brown sugary notes. I can just get into this company’s beers - too acetic.

Bottle. Reddish brown colour with a thick longlasting tan head. Malty aroma and sour. Malty flavor with a tart fruitiness. Sweet sour finish.

Bottled. (BB 050517) Clear, dark, dark red with a diminishing, small head. Lovely vinous, fruity-sour aroma with cherries and some dried fruits. Flavor is quite mild and pleasant. Sour, fruity cherry-dominated beer. An astringent bitterness finishes it off. (060108)

Weird stuff. Powerful, and not unpleasant aroma of balsamic vinegar and raisins. Dark red color and nearly still. Sweet, rotting fruit combined with sour vinegar in the flavor. One of the thickest and most heavy beers I have had. Not as light and fruity as their Duchesse De Bourgogne, but also a good beer that requires more time than its lighter cousin.
