Amber ale with orange peel, grains of paradise & Coriander
Our take on the smooth, easy drinking ambers poured in cafés across Belgium, Rare Vos (Strange Fox) takes its name from a tavern near Brussels known for cycling contests, pigeon races and outstanding ales. Pouring a brilliant copper with a creamy white head, this bright, beguiling beer is sensational to session, and pairs wonderfully with mussels, frites and other pub fare.
Because at the end of the day, it’s good to enjoy the end of the day.

330ml bottle from Mybrewerytap
Pours orange with a white head. Aroma has notes of floral notes, fruits, apricose and spices. Taste is quite fruity and spicy with floral notes and apricose. Slightly sticky and sweet finish. Okay, quite fruity Belgian styled ale.

Bottle from Stirchley Wines, Birmingham. Copper coloured pour with an off white head. Yeasty nose with notes of fruit and spice. Over carbonated. Sweet flavour with more malts and a slight fruitiness. Nothing in the finish.. I really don’t see the point in importing such average beers as this.

355ml bottle. Pours a dark reddy orange with a large head. Aroma is red wine fruits and nutty yeast. Taste is dark fruits and nutty yeast throughout. Nice and full in the mouth, but a little too much carbonation.

750 ml bottle purchased at the Brewery 8 Aug 2011. Used a snifter. Let stand for 10 minutes. Slow tilted pour still produced large thick, full, bubbly head. Well carbonated. Color is amber with a slight orange hue. Lots of lace covers on the way down the glass. Nose is very fruity with plenty of Belgian yeast and spice. Taste is spot on for the style. Lots of bread, yeast, sweet malts, spices. A touch of candy sugar. Mouthfeel is creamy with a touch of floral bitterness. Medium bodied. Well-made brew, very drinkable.

Drank this beer at Freeman’s in NYC, where I felt cool until I realized my brother-in-law got stuck paying 80 dollars for Macaroni and Cheese, and this beer cost me twelve bucks. Twelve ounces, mind you, not the 750. And, while Rare Vos has its charms, a dollar an ounce is a bit much. Still, I’ll try not to let this fiscal idiocy harm my objectivity. Rare Vos looks Belgian, authentically so, with a lovely color and unyielding head. Smells kind of like spiced bread. Good, but too much so; the taste becomes a letdown, bland, mildly sweet and spicy, but victim to a whole lot of yeast and a whole lot of carbonation. That pretty head apparently means the body has bite. Not my favorite brew, but it leaves me curious about the brewery. (7/19/08)

bottle@’t Waagstuk: pours clear amber/copper except for bottom of the bottle which was hazy, small off-white head that isn’t all that persistent, smell & taste, floral, strong presence of spices, herbal with a touch of burned caramel, very bread-like, this Belgian-style beer is distinctly different from the Belgian beer that I have tried so far, interesting but not worth to seek out if it is outside of your reach

Sample from the bottle. Poured a near clear amber with near white head that lasted through the beer and laced nicely. Aroma had a citrus note with a slight pine note and a backing light sweet fruit note. Flavor began with grapefruit and citrus with some sweet grain and light fruit with just a hint of backing spice.

another great one from ommegang, extremely enjoyable amber ale, nice tight carbonation, aroma is a little lacking, but the flavor more than makes up for it. some orange zest and hop spice, a little bready malt. delicious.

12oz bottle. Poured a clear copper color with a pretty large 3 finger head. Aroma was bready notes, yeast, malts, banana spice. Smells exactly like a Belgian Ale should. It also tastes like one should, with notes of bread, yeast, malts, spices. It’s largely drinkable, though palate could be a bit better for my tastes.
