Virginia India Pale Ale otherwise known as Virgindia Pale Ale

The embodiment of true Virginia hospitality, Hardywood VIPA offers alluring tropical aromatics, a refreshingly delicate body and a bright, juicy finish. Heirloom Virginia barley rounds out the malt bill and creates a perfect sense of balance with a dose of citrusy Virginia hops. VIPA is our take on a Virginia India Pale Ale, or as we like to call it, Virgindia Pale Ale. Our interpretation of a Virginia IPA is crafted with locally sourced ingredients, from golden barley grown in the coastal plains to hops cultivated in the Appalachian piedmont. Pleasantly refreshing on the humid days of summer, but flavorful enough to satisfy on a cool winter evening, VIPA is just one more reason Virginia is for lovers.

Hardywood VIPA is the culmination of an extensive development process that included a search for the finest Virginia-sourced ingredients we could find. VIPA proudly features Virginia-grown hops from Piedmont Hops, LLC, Huguenot Hops and Misty Mill Hops at Rockmill Farm, as well as two-row barley grown by Bay's Best Feed in Heathsville, VA and malted at Copper Fox Distillery in Sperryville, VA.

Bottle at home in Hackney - picked up at M&S Canary Wharf. Pours totally clear gold with a foamy, white head. Pretty basic stuff, a bit 2009, some piney hops, orange peel, mellow grassy bitterness, dry pale bread. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Very mellow resin in the finish, more piney-grassy bitterness. Simple but drinkable enough.

Bottle from Marks and Spencer, drunk at home. Mid-gold and clear with a foamy white head. Light aroma of pear, pine, honey and orange peel with some astringent notes. Bittersweet taste, fairly resinous on the tongue. Finish is extremely bitter with medicinal hops in the aftertaste. Medium carbonation. A good if vwry basic IPA.

On tap at Hardywood, pours a cloudy golden blonde with a small white head. Aroma brings out somewhat harsh, floral and citrus hops, with an earth, biscuity malt base. Flavour is along the same lines, with bitter, earthy, citrus and floral hops, and a toasted biscuity malt base. Pretty standard and lacking much depth. Meh.
