Harpoon Dark is a Harpooner favorite, and has been since we first started brewing it. While the beer has never been our lead horse outside the brewery walls, that’s okay by us. We’re just happy brewing it and drinking it.
A blend of specialty malts gives our Dark a velvety mouthfeel with roasted notes and a hint of chocolate, balanced by a subtle hop aroma. Hard to describe but easy to drink, Harpoon Dark is rich in character and light on the palate. The overall character is hearty malt and chocolate balanced with a crisp hop bitterness.

Very nice pour from a bottle. Dark, opaque, with a thin head, off-white with tan and blue notes. Aroma is sweet caramel, bananas, almost bananas foster-ish, with even a slight hint of bubblegum. Flavor is very nice, sweet, dark chocolate with a bitter chocolate finish. Nice full mouthfeel, overall very good beer.

Bomber. Pours a dark amber with a medium beige head that quickly diminishes leaving spotty lacing. The aroma is a bready malt, raisin, and caramel. Medium mouthfeel with a sweet toast caramel and chocolate with lingering dry finish. A good dunkel from Harpoon.

12 ounce bottle into pilsener glass, best before 4/15/2012. Pours crystal clear reddish brown color with a small 1 finger tan head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Good spotty lacing clings down the glass. Aromas of big caramel, toffee, nuttiness, biscuit, chocolate, vanilla, toast, and light fruitiness. Fantastic aromas with great balance and complexity. Taste of caramel, chocolate, toffee, biscuit, nuttiness, toast, herbal, roast, and light dark fruits. Lingering notes of caramel, chocolate, herbal, toast, nuttiness, toffee, and light fruitiness. Nice balance and complexity of flavors; with no cloying sweetness at all. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy and crisp mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a great Munich Dunkel! Nice flavor balance and robustness; and very smooth to drink. Really enjoyed this, and this might be my choice for an easily available dunkel in the future.

Bran flakes and walnut nose. Clear brown, medium tan head., little retention. Cola, charcoal, dark roasted barley malt flavor. Smoky finish. Decent offering of a style that is poorly executed by most American breweries.

~6 oz sampler at the Harpoon taproom in Boston Logan airport. The pour is brown golden, mostly clear. The aroma is light caramel sweet malt, along with a light roast character. Fresh aroma. The taste is a nice mix of the lightly sweet malt and the dry char roast. The palate is light bodied, natural carbonation and a flinty dry finish. Nice, this was a really easy drinking beer.

Picked this up for around $6 from Harpoon Brewery in Windsor Vermont. Enjoyed in a Hill Farmstead glass.
A - Poured a nut brown colour. Dark brown appearance SRM of 35 in the glass but at the pour, it’s much lighter. One finger tan head subsided quickly with a minor bit of lacing left behind.
S - Very nutty roasted malts. Slight bits of fudge and caramel and grapefruits.
T - Big malt forward taste very german taste, mocha and a nice level of bitterness. Falls short though on the finish and fullness of the malts and has a edge of watery taste but that is sort of in line with this style
M - 85% Carbonation, medium body and a very weak bavarian yeast finish.
O - It’s drinkable, perhaps on a warm day but overall weak and not something I’d seek out again.

Had this at a party. Enjoyed in a pint glass
A - dark brown, slight head that stuck around
S - german bock comes to mind. Dry, malty and very earthy.
T - Smoked malts, some honey and a bit of citrus on the back end. nice balance of hops but tastes like something you’d’ get on tap at a bar in Germany or Belgium which isn’t terrible but not what I look for in beer.
M - 100% carbonation on the mouth swish, lingering dry ness and mild maltiness that sticks around FOREVER.
O - Drinkable but probably better on tap.
