Cask @ The Flying Horse, LGW

Pours dark copper with a small bubbly head. Aroma of earthy malts, toffee, sweet caramel and syrup. Taste is malty, smooth and slightly fruity with some toffee and caramely notes. Finish is smooth, slightly bitter and malty. Okay.

Cask at Jolly Sailors, Brancaster Staithe, Norfolk. 8th July. Clear, ruby colour. Thick, bubbly, off white head. Chewy malt. Cherry. Hint of toffee. Taste is light dry. Fruity bitter. Fairly full bodied. Finish is dry and light bitter.

Cask @ White Horse, Parsons Green. Pours dark amber with caramel / fruity nose. Taste is malt, toffee, fruitcake, jam and a light bitter finish. Decent session bitter.

Dark red beer with a bubbly head. Very light fruit scent. Flavour is fruity with malt but is a bit watery and lightweight given the strength. Drinkable but is, surprisingly, a disappointment compared to the bottled version.

Cask at the White Lady USE. Pours reddish brown, thin, off-white head. Aromas are fruitcake as promised, but also a sulphurous, yeasty note, figs and cooked dark fruits. Taste lets it down a bit though... Goes too sweet and one dimensional. Sweet finish. Ok.

Nice to still see some English beers on cask occasionally around Boston that arent called "Old Speckled Hen".
A picture is worth a thousand words and how can I outdescribe the pint pictured here? Head is off-white, well-retained, leaving light lacing and clarity is very high. Seems to be in tip-top shape.
Light caramel, raisins and plums in the nose tends towards the maltier side with the caramel somewhat outdoing the fruitiness, though it does dry out sufficiently on the finish. Maybe a touch of dusty hops, quite EKG or Saaz-like but used very sparsely. Maybe a touch of cardboard-like dullness in the nose. Aroma strength is medium, quite good for the style.
Filling in the mouth, it at first seems too malty, too full-bodied and just all-around too dull and heavy for the style/intended purpose. Some fruitiness enters, hop bitterness, albeit light, does actually attempt to balance and the carbonation engages enough to stave off a lot of the body. And the beer isn’t terribly sweet, just sort of thick, for lack of a better term. And of course, that’s all relative to the style, this isn’t actually a thick beer. By the end of the first pint, it had already begun to go down more easily. The second and third were no problem at all (though that may be due to other problems, ahem, reasons....).

Cask @ Wetherspoons, Milton Keynes. I can’t believe it’s taken me this long for Broadside! Ruddy brown with a thick white head. Aroma is complex: figs and malt, but also sulphur and sheet metal. Taste is sweet and warming, accentuating the malt and fruit. Verdict: lovely, but temperamental. Must be spot on if in cask, otherwise it’s an acrid mess. Search it out in worthwhile establishments.

26/01/2014 La Tana (tap). Ambrata.miele di castagno, limpidissima, schiuma bianca media, molto persistente. Al naso sentori di biscotto, leggero zucchero di canna, toffee, frutta rossa, luppolo, molto buona e pulita. In bocca attacco dolciastro, biscottoso, nel finale è ottimamente bilanciata con l’amaro. Corpo medio-leggero, piacevolmente watery, carbonazione media. Ottima beva, bell’equilibrio nelle componenti dolce-amaro.
