Auch dieses Bier trinke ich erneut nach einigen Jahren. Es hat mir damals überhaupt nicht geschmeckt und daran hat sich nicht geändert. Wo das Jubiläums Pilsner noch als einfaches Industrie-Pils durchgeht, so ist das normale Pils einfach nur grauslich. Es hat einen stechenden, süßlichen Geschmack nach Tod und Verderben, den man schwer wieder los wird. Ein bisschen erinnert es an gammligen Apfelsaft, den jemand mit abgestandenen Mineralwasser aufgespritzt hat.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Beer Market Jaffa. Thanks eyes_wide_shut. Clear straw with a white head. Aroma of graininess, hay and light herbal and metallic notes. Sweetish flavor with malt, graininess, vegetal notes and some slightly herbal bitterness. Rather light-bodied.

Body: Light somewhat watery body, medium carbonation.
Flavour: Hops, malt, sugary, hay.

This was ’my beer’ back in the days when West Berlin had a wall around it and Berliner Kindl still had a brewery: in fact I played football against the brewery team once. I try and re-visit the city every two years or so. I was surprised to see I’ve never written about this old friend of mine from the late 1980’s. I had a 0.3 litres poured for me in Dicke Vertin, Charlottenburg on 22nd Jan 2014 for old times sake. It’s changed a little if my memory serves me correctly: still bright, golden, clean and clear but missing the crisp dry hoppiness I remember. It never was a clever Pilsner, just pleasant and refreshing with a hop lead, it still is, but it seems more basic than ever, the malts appear more corn like in flavour and the finish was slightly metallic in nature. Glad I tried it again, it’s better than that awful Berliner Pilsner that has taken over half the city but not much better.
