Our location, on the northern California coast, is in close proximity to the migratory path of gray whales and the southern habitat of orcas. The plight of Steller sea lions and their declining populations is an issue that resonates with us. This is also the birthplace of whale activism.

In the spirit of the Mendocino Whale Wars of the late 1960s and early 70s, North Coast Brewing is pledging a portion of the proceeds of every bottle and keg of North Coast Steller IPA to marine mammal research and rescue through the North Coast Brewing Company Marine Mammal Research Fund, a project of The Ocean Foundation.

Like muscat, spruce tips, and pennyroyal, North Coast Steller IPA is redolent of resinous terpenes: myrcene, linalool, pinene, and geraniol.

Pour is a clear golden with a huge white head. Aroma is a pretty solid hop with the most dominant aroma being a fresh peeled orange. Flavor is a bit of citrus on a crackerlike bone dry malty body. Finish does not leave a huge hop presence behind but this is dry and a touch bitter. Not a sweet malt bomb IPA by a long shot. Not an overly intense IPA but it is pleasant and drinkable.

Rated Feb. 2016. Poured up on tap at Ground Control where it exhibits a near clear copper body that supports a near white head of foam that leaves behind some spotty lacing. The aroma offers up malty pine like hops, crystal malts and a dash of citrus. The taste delivers kind of a pale ale mildly roasty malt backbone that supports spicy hops, a bit of resiny near pine like hops and then some citrus hops. It tastes a little old school and a little past its prime.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 9/11/2015. Pours slightly hazy/cloudy orange/amber color with a 2 finger fairly dense and fluffy off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, lemon zest, orange peel, light pepper, pine, honey, toasted bread, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of bright citrus/tropical/pine hops and moderate bready malt notes; with good strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, lemon zest, orange peel, light pepper, pine, honey, toasted bread, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Moderate amount of piney/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, lemon/orange peel, pepper, pine, honey, toasted bread, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of juicy citrus/tropical/piney hops and moderate bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from bitterness as well. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately sticky, and lightly creamy/bready balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice American IPA style. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of juicy citrus/tropical/piney hops and moderate bready malt flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Bottle from Brewers Haven. Nice looking pour, thick, fluffy head, sheets of lacing around the glass. Appearance is best feature. Mild aroma, faint mustiness. Taste brings sharp hop bitterness to the fore, followed by a grainy taste, more cereal than malt. Bitterness lingers long after the finish, slightly dry and chalky.

Draught at Vancouver Craft Beer Week 2015
Hazy golden color with compact head. Very nice aroma, hop juice, hop cones. The malt flavor is not very deScriptive, quite dry, and the hop flavor too is decent but more is expected in,an ipa. Resiny final.
Clean IPA.

Sampled on draft at the Rivertowne Pub this beer poured a dark amber color with a huge foamy yellow-white head that lingered and left good lacing. The aroma was dryish, floral and piney. The aroma is bitter and dry with perfume and piney hop notes. Long hoppy finish. Medium body. Meh.
