Sampled @ 3. Mainzer Craftbier Messe 2017. A dark brown beer with a small beige head. Aroma of chocolate, sweet dark malt, some toffee. Taste of sweet chocolate, vanilla, lactose, soft roasted malt. Okay.

From the tap at FOB, Rimini, Italy. Pours black with brownish foam, medium-fine. Aroma is toasted and herbaceous. Body is average like carbonation. Taste is somehow sweet in the very beginning and then a marked bitterness comes up. Finish is rather long and bitter.

(Keg at Konttori, 20170808) The beer poured black. Its head was medium sized, dense and lightly brown. Aroma had ash, liquorice and sweetness. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were pine, sweetness, liquorice, ash and bitterness. Aftertaste was sweet, burnt and bitter. A too burnt to be a pleasant black IPA.

Bottle. Almost black.Opaque. Decent beige head. Citrusy hops and dark malts on aroma. Roasted and burnt notes present. Light to medium body. Fairly dry taste. Leading fruity and resiny hops with stout-like background. Medium bitterness. High drinkability. Good. Yet too stouty.

Bottle at Julep in Bresso. Pours black with nice head that remains for a long time. Aroma is refreshing and nicely herbally hoppy. Dark malts (rather chocolatey) are accompanied by herbal and grapefruity/citrusy hops. Light to medium body. Flavour is nicely malty, the chocolate malt comes through full force, giving it a very nice chocolatey malt base with some hints of coffee. Nice balance with the hops, not as intense as in aroma. Herbal with intense grapefruit and general citrus flavours. Delicious black IPA.

Bottle, 0.33l. Gift from a friend while he was a trip to Italy, thanks! Thick black pour, no light goes through this one. Three finger creamy beige head with average retention. However, a thin creamy layer stays throughout the whole drink. Thick lacing on the glass. Nose is a nicely balanced mix of roasted and hoppy. Touch of coffee. Some nice wood notes in there as well. Medium body with regular to high carbonation. Texture is somewhat thin and watery, making the carbonation more prickly on the tongue. Taste is mostly bitter with some sour notes. Not as bitter as expected, considering the IBU rating of 90. It’s actually very nicely balanced and quite drinkable. Rich aroma. Malts, both caramel and roasted, dark fruits, berries. Wood. Licorice. Subtly smoked. Hops in the aftertaste. Nice combination of herbs and citrus. Alcohol is subdued in the taste, but it does hit in the head. Long finish, pleasantly bitter and slightly peppery. Overall, excellent black IPA. Absolutely delicious.
