A contradiction in term, black IPA’s are a clash of styles old and new. Modern tangy citrus hops merge with roasted chocolate malts for a truly classic beer. Black as night, but close your eyes and you're drinking a zesty IPA.

Bottled. More or less black colour with a small beigeish brown head, that leaves some lace. Aroma is coffee, roasted malts, some slight liquorice and a bit ashy notes. Flavour is very similar, but has a nice strong citrusy and grassy hop profile to it. Also mild black currant to it. Interesting take on Black IPA.

Medium beige head. Opaque black body goes hazy dark red at edges. Perfumy lacquer and earth aroma with sour, stale beer notes. Dry-acidic earthy roasty taste with sour, rotten finish. Awful. Must be infected, but tastes like the unspoiled version might be really nice. (0.5l bottle, from wine monopoly web order.)

0.5l clear bottle. Deep deep dark brown - almost black non the pour this. It has a nice medium sized dark chocolate brown head that's leaving some nice lacing. The nose has a spicy touch to it. I get wet paint, Christmas spices, a good form of cardboard, chocolate paper and some dark grassy hint all the way in the back. The taste has this faint sourness. Not sure if it's meant to be there, but never the less, it's there. Really nice gentle oily on the mouthfeel and it's softly carbonated. The source sourness is a bit disturbing to be honest, but it has other good elements. Chocolate and roasted malts as two of them, bitter cocoa is another. Lots of cold coffee bitter acidity in the aftertaste. Quite in balance I have to say but I feel no urgent rush to try again. 17.08.2013

Dark, almost opaque black color, good creamy brown head. Toasted, licorice aroma. Medium-bodied. Licorice, some burnt malts, maybe even slightly smokey. Slightly milky-lactosy with some late bitterness. Restless.

Bottle at home. Has a totally black colour with a small, light beige head. Fruity hops in the aroma at first before roasted malt and dark chocolate rolls over. In addition I find oak, licorice, dark berries and soy sauce. The flavour has some fruit first and then more roastedness, sour berries and ash in the end. Has a slick and silky mouth feel, and a light to medium bitterness. One of a kind Black IPA, the flavour appears a bit unbalanced in my opinion.

20.08.2013, 0,5l bottle @ home:
Nice slightly brown creamy longlasting head. Aroma is slightly rich, dark malts, coffee, hops, licorice, caramel, leafs, dark sugar, pine needles, rubber. Taste is.....OMG! What the heck is this?! Smells so good, and the taste is just awful! If I didn’t know it’s still 1,5 year till best before date on this one, I’d rather say it was 5 years past. It’s just watery sour, one dimensional, metallic, harsh and burnt. Among the worst beers I’ve ever tasted...

(Keg at Hilpeä Hauki, 20130716) The beer poured black. Its head was medium sized and light brown. Aroma had fruitiness and liquorice. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were roasted malts, fruitiness, liquorice, ash and bitterness. Aftertaste was ashy and bitter. Too burnt and roasty to be called as a Black IPA. Still nice to drink.

On tap @ Kick. Pitch black body with a small but dense tan head. Aroma is light roasted malt with moderate citric fruit and hint of pine. A smooth, soft, light roasted malt flavor with a good fruity bitterness. Not very strong hop profile, but obvious. Fine and balanced body, pleasant aftertaste. Enjoyable beer that states what a black IPA is all about.
