A contradiction in term, black IPA’s are a clash of styles old and new. Modern tangy citrus hops merge with roasted chocolate malts for a truly classic beer. Black as night, but close your eyes and you're drinking a zesty IPA.

Bottle, 6%. Fruity aroma. Black colour. Small head. The flavour is sweet and jammy, roasted with a good hoppy note. Not my style, but OK.

On tap at Kick. A black one, topped by a dense, light tan head leaving lacings. The aroma is faintly buttery, with caramel, dark chocolate and some lightly citrusy hops. Roasted flavor with chocolate and coffee. A pleasant bitterness chimes in, bringing some balance. Full body, soft and pleasant carbonation, rather dry. Lasting roasted finish. A proper beer indeed, although a bit buttery especially in the aroma. 130520

Sample from bottle at Beer13. Pours black with a beige head. Malty aroma, lightly roasty, with chocolate, dark fruits and citrus. Medium body. Finishes fairly dry and pleasantly bitter. Decent, but not a favourite. (2013-04-19)

Draught @ Kahdet Kasvot
Aroma is typical to black ipa with resiny hops, raspberries, fruits and vanilla. Flavour is hoppy with resin, roasted notes, fruits and some odd savor I find hard to describe. Decent.

Opaque black beer with a good size fluffy pale tan head. Softish semi dry palate, light. Dark malts with a pleasantly light touch of roast. Creamy too. Nice mild piney hops provide balancing bitterness and bring up the rear. Semi dry finish with a mild bitter linger. Not bad at all - very drinkable.

Half pint, hand pulled at a Wetherspoons in London during their 2011 Autumn Beer Festival, which it was brewed especially for (I believe). The pump clip said 5% ABV. A Black IPA; or American Black Ale (on BA), looks like a stout but has four different hop varieties in the brew: Brewer’s Gold, Cascade, Centennial and Chinook. This ensures the smell isn’t stout like, even if it looks like one, the taste also isn’t stout or porter-ish either. The taste a weird blended concoction of citrusy bitter hops and mild dark chocolate and coffee flavours: didn’t take to it. The body depth, smell and taste just didn’t fit what my eyes and mouth expected. If you don’t know what I mean try this: make some custard and add some flavourless green colouring, no matter how you try, the custard just doesn’t taste like custard anymore.
