Contact Haze

The day the world stood still and Elysian brewed a hazy IPA. Rules were broken to bring you contact haze, a tangled chemistry of mild haze, low bitterness, and an explosion of hop aroma. Bursts of bright raspberry, currant, citrus, guava, and passion fruit, with a slight floral note.

Light green onions and some peel. Not a ton here. A little caramel. Pours hazy orange with good head and lacing. Hop tang finish. Can.

Can suspected to be ~ 6 months old A: Poured 1 of thick foam atop an actually fairly clear pale gold body. Good retention and thick lacing. S: Bright tart orange citrus aroma with faint caramel or sweet bread. T: Follows the nose with crisp orange or tangerine pulp and pith. Biscuity malts, herbs and pine follow for quite a nice balance. M: Fine carbonation and light body with a lightly creamy feel. O: Can is likely past its prime and yes, it's evil empire but this is very tasty and easy drinking. Definitely worth having fresh.

16 ounce can. Pours a slightly hazy yellow hue with a large white eggshell head. A nice light fruity nose, oranges. Great fluffy palate, sweet, lemons, biscuits, soft orange peel, lots of oranges throughout. Clean. Good.

Another of my summer IPAs, not my favorite style but tolerable. A 12 oz can from Odessa’s The Cellar, thank you my friends. A pour into my Buffalo Bayou snifter, it’s straw yellow with a moderate spread of white bubbles. I smell citrus and cut grass. A taste of grapefruit, lemon, hay and water. A pleasant diversion.

This really isn't hazy at all. Looks pretty much like any run-of-the-mill IPA: clear, copper gold, with mid-sized head. Aroma of grass, citrus, some tropical fruit. Flavor is grassy, bready, with some citrus. They really need to do something more with this for it to qualify for NE-style IPA.

12 ounce can. Pale gold pour exhibits advertised haze and a large rocky whitehead. Fragrant tropical fruit hop nose. Mango, papaya, passion fruit and a touch of pineapple. Moderate bitterness. Medium bodied. Nicely simplistic.
