Sussex Best is our most famous beer, a superbly balanced bitter with prominent hop character. The brew evolved over decades, satisfying the expectations of the people of Sussex and its adjoining counties. Finest Maris Otter malted barley is supplemented with a dash of Crystal malt for balance. Our hops are a blend of four different local varieties, to give a distinctive hoppy finish.

Cask B.C."H." over very dull amber beer. If there’s a nose beyond some stale hops, and a bit of ureum (often with UK hops), I’m not getting it. Oxydized hops, a bit of mixed malts, and a bit of dusty grain. Light - but what’s so "Best" about it? Stronger than a NABLAB? This is poor.

Cask at The Jolly Anglers, Reading. a dull chestnut clour with an off-white head and a fruity aroma; a complex dry taste with hints of cinnamon and other spices, leaving a well-balanced bitter and slightly nutty aftertaste.

Half pint. Amber body with a white layer. Spicy aroma with notes of hops. Fruity flavour with roundness of malt. Medium mouthfeel. Quite well balanced bitterness (Cask at The Royal Oak, Borough 15.09.2006).

(Cask at Royal Oak, Borough, London, 1 Aug) Colour is dark amber with tawny hints, small head. Nose is fruity with dried fruit and earthy, dusty hops and that lovely yeasty Harveys character. Taste is malty/fruity with dried fruit, raisins, earth/dusty hops, nuts (chestnut?). Hoppy but rather short finish, fairly dry. And that lovely Harveys character making this one of my favourite standard bitters. Lovely!

Cask. Clear and amber beer with small white bubbles around the rim. Slightly roasted aroma with fruity hops and some acidity dominating. Thin to medium body with flavors of hops, fruits and some malty notes. Quite fruity and hoppy finish. (060710)
