Sussex Best is our most famous beer, a superbly balanced bitter with prominent hop character. The brew evolved over decades, satisfying the expectations of the people of Sussex and its adjoining counties. Finest Maris Otter malted barley is supplemented with a dash of Crystal malt for balance. Our hops are a blend of four different local varieties, to give a distinctive hoppy finish.

Cask at the Royal Oak, Borough on 11th June 2025. Clear dark copper with shallow off-white foam and scant lacing. Richly malty in aroma. Spicy and nutty maltiness in-mouth with an abundance of herby grasses, which go on to feature in an otherwise malty, long finish. A smooth mouthfeel and a fair amount of body. A most rewarding ale. Kept perfectly.

Med Steven på The Roebuck Inn, etter Parsifal på Glyndebourne: klar rødlig kastanjefarge med fint skum som varer. En smaksrik maltdrevet bitter, jordaktige toner, skog og delikat krydder bitterhet. Close to the source, og naturligvis velpleiet fra cask.

Cask at The Herne Tavern. Crystal clear amber with a half finger white head, holds with a nice layer of bubbles. Nose of light caramel, grassy hops. Flavour is medium malt sweetness, quite savoury, with very British hop profile. Smooth carbonation, light-medium body, dry woody hop finish. Decent cask pint.

Cask at Roebuck, Burton on Trent. Pours the classic “bitter brown” with a medium sized foamy off-white head and excellent lacing. Malts to the fore in the aroma alongside some traces of yeast. In the mouth it is on the borderline between sweet and bitter, with malts, autumn fruits and hints of hops and pepper. Later comes some traces of ginger, whilst the hops increase and lead to a slightly dry finish. This is decent.
