Sussex Best is our most famous beer, a superbly balanced bitter with prominent hop character. The brew evolved over decades, satisfying the expectations of the people of Sussex and its adjoining counties. Finest Maris Otter malted barley is supplemented with a dash of Crystal malt for balance. Our hops are a blend of four different local varieties, to give a distinctive hoppy finish.

Cask, Queen’s Head Piccadilly. Amber, lasting off white head. Gentle bread, floral and caramel aroma. Supple slip from sweet and smooth to peppery, bitter and slightly funky. Complex but very drinkable.

Cask at Three Fishes, Shrewsbury. Pours “bitter brown” with a small off-white head and good lacing. The aroma has malts and caramel and just a hint of bread crusts. In the mouth it is slightly sweet and quite juicy. Malts are the mainstay of the flavour, plus traces of traditional hops, oranges and marmalade. Some bitterness in the finish. This is excellent – what a bitter should be like.

Cask at the Marine, Eastbourne. Poured a clear copper colour with a frothy off-white head. The aroma is malt, light toffee caramel. The flavour is moderate to light bitter, light sweet, with a smooth, malt, nutty, herbal, light woody hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.
