The second of the Hartleys ales, Cumbria Way joined XB in 2001. Our former Head Brewer, Chris Helin invited tenants from our finest Cumbrian houses to select a new beer from a range of trial ales. The response was overwhelming Cumbria Way!
Cumbria Way takes its name from the 112km footpath which passes through the heart of the Lake District National Park and links the two historic Cumbrian towns of Ulverston and Carlise.
Hartleys Cumbria Way is a full bodied bitter beer with superb mouth feel of rich malt and hops complemented by complex aromas of spicy hop, malt and tart fruit. It has a long dry finish with citrus fruit notes

Cask, 4.1%. Mildly fruity and nutty flavour. Clear dark golden colour. Floral hoppiness, mild and nice. The aftertaste is slightly cleansing grassy hops. Low to medium bitterness. Good chalky mouthfeel. Nicely refreshing.

(Cask at Castle, Manchester, 22 July 2009) Amber colour with frothy, white head. Fruity nose with apricots, orange peel, biscuits and slightly earthy hops. A touch of sulphur. Fruity taste with notes of bicuity malt, apricots, orange and earthy hops in a finish with well balanced bitterness. Rather light body. Decent bitter not straying too far from the mainstream.

(Cask)Dark amber; slight head. very light hopnose, a bit of coloured malts. very well-balanced taste, between British (discreet) hopsand malts, slightly caramelised. Palate is a bit empty. Caramel much obvious in the aftertaste - even butterscotch - but hops are gone. A bit above average. Nothing exciting.
