The second of the Hartleys ales, Cumbria Way joined XB in 2001. Our former Head Brewer, Chris Helin invited tenants from our finest Cumbrian houses to select a new beer from a range of trial ales. The response was overwhelming Cumbria Way!

Cumbria Way takes its name from the 112km footpath which passes through the heart of the Lake District National Park and links the two historic Cumbrian towns of Ulverston and Carlise.

Hartleys Cumbria Way is a full bodied bitter beer with superb mouth feel of rich malt and hops complemented by complex aromas of spicy hop, malt and tart fruit. It has a long dry finish with citrus fruit notes

On tap at The Castle Hotel, Manchester. Pours clear orange with medium white head. Malty, caramel, some vague fruit notes. Generally quite bland and watery.

On cask at the Red Dragon, Kirkby Lonsdale. Appearance - golden amber with a nice lacy head. Nose - strawberry straight up. Wasn’t expecting that. Light medicinal, like kids’ medicine. Somewhere between orange and strawberry. Taste - a lot more bland. Light orange and malt bag. Palate - light to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a fairly good finish. Overall - solid. Nose was implying a much more exciting palate.

Cask at the Wellington Arms, Bedford.  Golden brown. Clear and fairly flat, with a thin foamy head. Good distinctive aroma, if a bit faint: wildflowers, biscuit, leather, caramel and honey notes. A simple bitterness, buffeted by floral sweetness, fades to a less pronounced but nonetheless tenacious bitter finish and aftertaste. Mouthfeel is uncommonly weak. Incredibly watery, lowering the enjoyment of the beer. A recipe at odds with itself, it won’t win any prizes (at least with Ratebeer) but it’s reasonable enough in its own way.

Cask at The Wellington, Birmingham. Poured a clear medium amber with a thin broken white head and some broke lace. The aroma is light malt. The flavour is medium to light bitter with a watery malt light hop bitter palate. Light bodied with soft carbonation. A bit of a disappointment.

Cask at Castle Hotel, shared with Finn. Clear amber coloured body, loose white head, lacework to the glass. Leafy hops to the nose. Fruit hoppy taste supported by caramel malts. Rounded bitter ending. Soft in the mouth. Straightforward Brit bitter (Manchester, 21.01.2013).

A clear, light brown bitter with a tight creamy head. It’s a well balanced light bitter with a dry finish.

Cask @ The Berkeley, Wigan. Has a good body, but whilst this does help make this a fine ale it has no distinct taste, just a passable hoppy brew.
