A stout as black as the nearby volcanic flow from which it is named. Dive into its dark, robust depths with intense layers of espresso and chocolate. Roasted malt and barley give it a full, toasty finish.

Typical black body with a fine thick beige head. Good lacing. Dark malt, espresso and some chocolate. Medium + body. Nice balance between sweetness and bitterness. Creamy texture. Lovely complex and tasty flavor. WoW! Dark malt, espresso, toffee, mild roasted and some chocolate. Oh yeah. Spot on!

A new world stout, with lots of alcohol and a noticeable hop presence. I love the dirty brown head. There are raisins, coffee, liquorice and toast in the aroma and those grapefruit and alcohol flavours give it a real kick. Very pleasant.

On tap at Harry’s Hofbrau. Slight cocoa and moderate low roast transitions to a moderate, dry bittersweet finish. Medium thin mouthfeel. Roast picks up as it warms.

Re-rate (last rating was when I was a baby rater and I already had everything on tap at my quick stop so worth a quick re-rate) Black with nice beige head. Very roasty, light chocolate notes, slightly creamy texture. As a 6.4% stout it’s solid. Oct 15, 2014 (7/3/7/4/14=3.5): Poured from nitro tap. Black with creamy beige head. Strong roast malt and dark coffee with very subtle chocolate notes. Mild sweet finish. Milky texture, sweet burnt finish.

Bottle @ weekly tasting shared by Joes. Opaque pitch black color, medium sized brown head that lasts for a decent while. Aroma is malts, lightly roasty, raisins, lightly earthy, lightly ash. Taste malts, lightly roasty, a hint of coffee, pretty bitter, a touch of liquorice. Decent body, decent carbonation. Pretty damn good!

Poured from 12oz bottle a pitch black with a large off white head of foam that dissipated slowly
The smell has a lot sweet roastiness to it with notes of chocolate and coffee.
The taste is also very roasty...nice balance between the sweetness from chocolate and coffee flavours and the hop bitterness. Makes for a very tasty yet smooth brew and there's no alcohol presence on the palate at all. Yum!
Bottom line: One of my favourite American Stouts out there. I highly recommend it!
