Light Nanaimo bar kind of feel. Some chocolate and a little roast, some musk. Caramel. Bitter finish. Black pour with good head and lacing. Some coffee.

473ml can. Pours a clear dark brown with red hue and a medium, creamy, long lasting, beige head that laces nicely. Sweet aroma of toasted malt, cocoa, graham cracker, vanilla and faint coconut. Sweet flavour of toasted malt, cocoa, sugar, vanilla and oats in a dry, mild bitter finish. Medium body with an oily texture and soft carbonation. Surprised by some of the low ratings here. While this does not remind me of the confection much, it is a tasty Imperial Porter.

Dark brown colour, fizzy and sparse head. Aroma of milk chocolate with a touch of vanilla. Soft mouthfeel, medium body strength; moderate sweetness; some cheapish chocolate upfront, with a dash of roastiness and coffee, and roasted nuts; some ashes in the finish.
I'm not sure about the reference to the Nanaimo Bar, but it's a pleasant beer.

On tap at the brewery, revised version is now a mere 6.2% alcohol. The body is brown mud and the foam is gone quick, coconut ant burnt fireplace wood on the nose. Flavour is sweet and chewy chocolate and molasses. Medium finish. Not quite a Nanaimo bar but still pretty tasty if you don't mind the sweetness.

On tap. Pours a very dark brown with full head. Aromas of sugary chocolate, vanilla and thin roasted malts. Flavors follow same. Sweet sugars up front and bitter roasted malts to finish. Canβt get the Nanaimo Bar theme.

473mL can, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma brings out artificial sugar, with light coconut, and a touch of vanilla extract. Flavour is quite artificial, with fake vanilla and coconut, artificial sugar, and graham crackers. Not unpleasant, but it's not convincing -- too artificial. Meh.

Can, Legacy. Dark brown with a thick head. On the nose, this comes across mostly with a thin cocoa note, normally reserved for porters quite a bit lighter. There's a little bit of body, but it's still kind of thin and boozy in the finish. Definitely not enough residual sugar. But worse, for me anyway, is that none of the critical pastry elements come through nearly enough - I would think this beer should have a syrupy chocolate richness (it doesn't), coconut on the level of, say, the Yellow Dog coconut porter (it doesn't) and a decent vanilla signature.
Ok, I'll say this - I think this is Van Isle's first pastry stout, and it's pretty far off from their usual product. So I can definitely respect that they're stretching themselves, and I can appreciate that they realized it needed to be imperial strength to work. So while this beer doesn't get there, it's not inherently bad, just an average strong porter, and I'd rather they doubled the flavour ingredients and upped the residual sugar next time, than stopped trying to make fun beers.
