Japanese porter, thanks Filip Dendooven for sharing at Belgium Chimipalooza! Thick and moussy, light greyish beige, quickly opening head over a deeply dark mahogany bronze-brown beer, bordering on blackish but still fully translucent, hazy. Aroma of soggy walnuts, melting caramel candy, wet leather, toffee, dried fig, hint of beef stock. Sweetish onset with a cured meat-tinged umami edge, soft carb, smooth and supple body. Pleasant enough nutty bittersweet maltiness, more sweet than bitter, but with a sufficiently bittering toasty edge at the end, lingering a bit along with a spicy hop bitter note – yet still ending a bit thin and watery. Simple, old school brown porter of English-like signature (think Samuel Smith’s Taddy Porter and the like), perfectly correct, no issues here but perhaps a bit ‘pale’ in personality compared with the flood of more expressive porters coming from the western craft beer countries.

Shiga Kogen Porter 5.5% Cola black with a thick beige head. The aroma is one of roasty malts and yet some sweet chocolate elements as well. Medium to light bodied with a bit of a velvety texture and the flavor is chocolate fudge, roasty and it even has the slightest hint of nuts. Solid stuff. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Med brown, toasty nose, earthy on the palate, toasty but just a touch of underlying malt sweetness. Good porter. Bit yeasty, if theres a big issue.

33cl bottle from Midori, Nagano. Pours close to black with a modest pale beige head. Mild, but pleasant aroma of roasted malt with some fruity notes, chocolate and hints of wood. Moderate to medium sweet with a balanced bitterness. Medium body with a fairly average carbonation. Decent, easy-to-drink porter.
