A golden beer whose aroma is dominated by hops that give characteristic citrus notes. Hops and fruit on the palate are balanced by malt and a bitter base. Dry hoppy finish with soft fruit flavors. A nationally respected ale, winner of numerous awards, JHB is a blond baby packed with flavour & perfect for those long sessions as well as a quick pint at lunchtime.

Marketed as Marks & Spencer Cambridgeshire Golden Ale, this is a cloudy straw yellow ale full of hops and citrus notes. Slightly soured taste, but fruity.

Cask from Staggs. Clear golden body with a thin white head. Decent lacing. Aroma of grain, straw, muted grapefruit and biscuit. Flavour of grass, grain and lemon. A tad soapy. Medium body with an oily texture. Flat carbonation. A bit dull but very drinkable. Better on cask than in bottle.

Cask at the Kingston Arms, Cambridge. Clear amber pour, thin broken white head. Ultra bitter taste with a hint of sourness in the palate. Quite a drinkable beer, but the bitterness on the palate could stop me drinking this for a session. I think that Oakham might need to do some work with this one.

Drank from the bottle on a train (no glass unfortunately) but what the hell I’ve had gallons of JHB in the past! Bottled version masquerading as M and S Cambridgeshire Summer Ale @ 4.2% ABV. It’s usually pale golden with a light haze and a small to medium white head. Now for the bits I can review to a more reasonable standard! Citrus hops on the nose allied to a little biscuit malt and fruit tones. Tastes of sweet caramel, citrus fruit, hops a little orange, light grapefruit and some herbal qualities. Medium bodied, a little more carbonation than the cask version but still a decent feel bearing in mind I was taking this straight from the bottle. Great beer, will re-review on cask in time.
