A few times a year we cut Dan loose to brew whatever he chooses. Always handcrafted, the bottle you hold is brewed for the adventurous soul. This is a very limited edition and we make no promises to ever brew this style again.

A complex and intriguing original. The mystery began with wild yeast spontaneously fermenting a rich treasure of malted barley and cherries. Unlined Oak casks breathe deep vanilla hues and chords of smoke into this sour brown ale. Our Master Brewer has forged a smooth garnet tapestry that defies description. Wander off the beaten path.

12oz bottle, Batch 1. Pours a translucent copper amber with a spitty, beige head. Nose is cherry juice, yeast, malt, sweet dough. Flavor is more cherry, sweet, a little light oak, yeast, spice. Finish is full bodied, fruity but amped up on the sweetness.

Bottle thanks to the GF. Pours a clear deep amber brown with a near white head that dissipated to the edges. Aroma is full of cinnamon and vanilla with underlying sour fruits and oak. Flavor begins with cinnamon and vanilla but oak and sour fruits grow toward the finish. Oddly, syrupy on the tongue.

Bottle from Guerde - thanks Andy! Pours dark ruddy copper/amber with a temporary whiteish head. Mild sour cherry aroma. Medium minus body with sharpish carbonation. Flavor is lightly sweet/lightly sour kriekish sort of sour brown ale. Some oaky smoke comes forth. Finishes smoothly kriekey - but less than super sour.

Pours a nice rusty-reddish brown with a fairly good-sized head which quickly dissipates. An interesting beer. I was ready to group it with the Cherry Stout and Belgian Red, but there’s a sour undercurrent to this that helps to combat the sweetness I associate with those beers. Lots of other flavor notes, like some vanilla, some smoke, some hops, etc., make this one definitely worth your while.

Bottle thanks to Rando7. Pours a mahogany color with thin white head. Nose is baked apple and cherry. Taste is cinnamon, nutmeg, smoked apple and cherry. My only gripe is that the nose and taste is a bit muted and left me wanting more of a good thing. --- Beer merged from original tick of Thumbprint Series Enigma on 09 Dec 2020 at 21:05

12oz bottle
Appearance: Pours clear copper/brown with a reddish/white head that dissipates in a few minutes. Good carbonation, the bubbles are flowing nicely from the bottom of the glass
Aroma: Tart cherries and oak
Taste: Tart fruits, sour malts, smooth vanilla flavors with some bitterness in the finish
Nice sour ale, not over the top sour. Easy drinkability.

Bottle from allendodd. Many thanks. I love the unavailable. Pours garnet with a finely foamed off-white head. Mildly sour aroma - like apple. Full bodied with creamy carbonation. The flavor is beautifully, mildly sour. Followed by apple and cherry. Tickles the rear undersides of the tongue. Mouth smacking. Wood, kandi, maybe cinnamon. Or not. Fan fuckin tastic. Notice how taste and tastic kind of relate? Here they do.

Bottle thanks to Optigon: Poured a chocolate brown with an off white thin head. The aroma is sour fruit with oak. Taste is a mix of bitter fruits and malts, there is some woodsy oak in it as well. Very fine sour ale.

Bottle thanks to thanks to zathrus13. Pours a muddy deep brown with a foamy off-white head that leaves a bit of lacing. Aroma is tart, but there is a sweetness, with vanilla, cherries, oak, brown sugar, cookie dough. Taste is not as sour as the nose would let on. Citrus, some fresh pineapple, cherries, lots and lots of vanilla, and maybe some maple syrup. Water like mouthfeel, light bubbles, and a decent amount of warming.

12oz bottle, courtesy of Sloth. Thanks man! Pours a thick, muddy brown-red color. Wow. I’ve haven’t sampled much of the New Glarus line but this beer has me eager to do so. Thick, meady, sweet cherry aroma. The taste is full and rich, a perfect merging between cherry and malt. Incredibly drinkable for 7%. Oaky vanilla complexities in there as well. Wild yeast flavors are well balanced out. This is one of the best Cherry/Sour beers I’ve ever had.
