Armada Ale was one of the first new 'Golden Ales' that emerged in the 1980s. It has a pronounced yet balanced hop character, derived from Fuggle and Golding hops. Originally commissioned by the National Maritime Museum, it quickly established itself as a piece of living history. Robust, refreshing and still a port of call in any beer-drinker's voyage of discovery.

Bottle, Carringtons, Chorlton. Poured a clear darkish amber colour with the merest of heads. Not a massive aroma, but what there was contained sweet malt and grassy hops. Flavour quite understated and a similar gig to the aroma. Not without some charm but bordering on average.

I wish I had something intelligent to say about this beer, but you see, I was pretty pissed when I drank it. When your pissed and you drink beer, your notes suck. Mine says "mildly bitter" with a 13. Yup, that is what beer does to you and that was RateBeer is actually very ironic phrase that most people probably havenโ€™t thought about. Oh well, nevertheless I have filled in more than the space I need.

Cask-conditioned at the Royal Oak, London SE1 27/1/09. Big thanks to the landlord who went down to the cellar to get me a pint of this one. Bright amber in colour with a decent, lacy off-white head. Fruity aroma with some earthy hops and distinctive Harveyโ€™s yeast. Flavour began with sweet malts, plenty of fruit and a grassy hop finish. Good stuff.

Mail order. Golden yellow with not much carbonation. Very bready, yet light bodied. Not much happening here.

500ml bottle. Pale amber with a small, off-white head but plenty of carbonation. Aroma of floral hops with a hint of caramel. Flavour had some biscuity malt with a buttery edge and a short dry finish. Ok.
