(Bottle, BBE Oct 08, at Pikkulintu on 2008-10-15) Red colour. Medium sized almost white head. Almond and raisin in nose. Full bodied palate with little carbonation. Raisin, almond, malts, bitterness, sweetness and hint of roastedness in taste. Long a little bit raisin flovoured aftertaste with tiny bitterness.

100ml taster from a bottle at EBF 08. Nice, deep mahogany body. Diminishing off-white head. There is hints of sweet caramel in the malty smell, offset by bitter fruits. Hop resin and dark fruits in flavour. Original review text: We were happy to find this festival ale at Crosse Keys, City. Cask, poured into a nice little one-third pint glass. Low, tan-coloured head to a deep, near black coloured body. Smell of dark malts and dried fruits like prunes. Anise, raisin, prunes and dark bread can be detected in the flavour profile leading to a malt bitter end. Medium bodied. One of the best at JDWs real ale festival. Another one the next day at JDWs Ice Wharf (London, 05.11. and 6.11.2012).

Cloudy reddish dark amber with large off white head. Sweet aroma with roasted malt, fruits and caramel. Sweet flavour with roasted malt, caramel and ripe fruits. Ends sweet with warming alcohol.

50 cL bottle. Pours almost clear golden deep amber with a lacing white head. Dense caramel malty aroma with a light bitterness. Mild fruity and caramelish malt flavoured with a light spice note showing through. Sweet lasting flavour. Lasting caramelish and sweet finish. Smooth and simple.

Purchased at Knightly Spirits in Orlando. The bottle has BBEOCT06 stamped on the neck. Pours clear amber and it took some coaxing to get a quickly dissipating half inch tan head. This beer is thin and watered down for a barleywine. I can sense it in the aroma. There’s dark fruit, vanilla and not much else in the nose. There’s none of the sticky chewy malt sludginess there like a typical barleywine. The over all mouth feel and taste makes me think this was cut with a non trivial amount of water to thin it out. In the flavor there’s mild dark fruitiness, cream soda, thin vanilla extract and caramel. The taste is alright but off-putting for the style.

Ruby colored ale with a small, light tan head. Toasty wood, dark fruit, plums, figs, and some earth. Not much carbonation in this medium thick brew. Flavor is dark fruits, caramel, sweet malts, light earth tones, and a bit of tart cherry. Didn’t pick up on the 7.5% alcohol. At times this reminded me of a light barley wine; good brew.

Cask Deep amber-brown, small darkish head. Very perfumy, complex esters, wood, vinous nose. Sweet taste, with Swiss chocolate, vinous notes, grapes or other berry mash, plums, and in the background I’d say a whiff of balsamic vinegar. Full bodied, obvious alcoholwarming. One of my all-time favourites. A British cask ale to stand amongs the best Belgian strong ales.
