First brewed in 1950, our malty award-winning Moonraker is dedicated to a local legend. The story goes that farmers close to the JW Lees brewery once fell into a pond, attempting to rake out a reflection of the moon they mistook for a truckle of fine Lancashire cheese. This strong ale should be handled with care, but its fruity aroma and rich, sweet flavour are now the stuff of legends too.

Bottle, Morrisons, West Kirby Poured a dark brown colour with a fast dissipating off white head. Sweet, roasted malt aroma with hints of dark fruit. Lacking in any real body somewhat disappointingly. Drinkable, but drab.

Bottle from Morrisons supermarket, Rich, malty deep red in colour. Roasted coffee too. This is better than the cask version, very drinkable indeed and at ยฃ1.39 a bargain. Iโll get back to Morrisons for some more of this, damn fine beer from oop north!

Hazy copper with a lasting off-white head. Malty aroma with a hint of dried fruits. Rich malty flavour with lots of caramel and just enough hoppy bitterness to balance the sweetness.

Bottle at European Beer Festival, Copenhagen. A clear, deep copper beer with a minimal, off-white head. Roasted malt and toffee in the aroma, with dried fruits in the background. Full-bodied and mellow, with toffee and roasted malt. A nice flavor of dried fruits too. A nice one, but far from pushing the limits. (080913)
