Bottled (gusher warning (in 2016)). Hazy deep orange colour with a mediumsize white head. Aroma is fruity, grassy, some herbal, earthy and mild spicy tones. Flavour is floral, some yeasty, grassy and mild acidic tones. Rich carbonation, so still fermenting? Or due the acidity some bacteria going wild?

330ml bottle. Clear amber colour with average to huge, frothy, slowly osteoporosing, minimally lacing, white head. Yeasty fruity and slightly yeasty spicy aroma, hints of red berries, some mirabelle, a peppery spicy and dusty yeasty touch, floral overtones. Taste seems initially to be dry, yeasty fruity, but turns almost immediately to quite sweet malty, the fruitiness remains constant, hints of red berries, a touch of mirabelle, minimally floral overtones; the finish is again a bit more dry. Quite simple, almost a bit monotonous (except for the change between dry- and sweetness) and anaemic.

Bottle. Blonde. Gusher. Citrus, salt and soft spicy notes in the aroma. Dry slightly alcoholic flavor with spicy notes, citrus and marmelade. peppery. Tasty and aromatic. Well made, in spite of the gushing.

Saison from a new German craft brewery - even the largely Reinheitsgebot-obeying Germany, with its undeniable historical influence on modern beer culture, has a number of these ’internationally oriented’ micro breweries nowadays (ever since Freigeist started it) and I must say, as a Belgian I cannot help but being flattered that some of them are tackling an old Belgian style like saison these days. Hail to the craft beer revolution, as something like this would have been unthinkable twenty years ago. Slow gusher - the hissing sound and mist coming out of the bottle were a sign of this so I managed to capture all of it in my glass without spilling a drop, but be warned, the foam keeps trying to escape from the bottle neck for a while after pouring. As a result of this, the head is very thick and rocky, towering high, egg-white in colour, coarse but still densely packed in structure and leaving thick patches of cobweb lacing on the edge of the glass; colour is a hazy light orange blonde with peachy hue and a suspension of minute yeast bits throughout, making it all the more misty (and darker orange) as the bottle progresses into the glass. ’Rural’ and indeed convincingly ’Belgian’ aroma of green banana, white bread crust, lots of orange (mostly dried orange peel but quite strongly so), straw, gooseberry, raw rhubarb, apple peel, ripe yellow plum, powder sugar, bitter honey, soap (has coriander been used?), field flowers, freshly cut grass, gingerbread, honey, dough, sweet Riesling wine, freshly baked cookies somewhere, ripe pear, candied lemon, something vaguely chalky fitting well into the whole, as well as something very vaguely plastic-like. Very fruity, lively, estery onset, lots of gooseberry, peach, pineapple, pear, some banana, sweetish and sourish well balanced against each other, unfortunately (but unexpectedly) overcarbonated to the point where the tongue is numbed, but it’s easy enough to wait for a while to let the gas escape, so that it becomes a bit ’calmer’. Pleasantly bready middle phase, caramelly malt sweetness, lots of fruity esters and spicy phenols dancing on top, leading to a somewhat dryish finish, though this somewhat soapy malt sweetness keeps prevailing; an earthy, spicy hop bitterness adds balance and satisfaction, while the lingering yeastiness adds further ’bready’ effects without becoming too starch-like. Earthy, very fruity, refreshing: I feel sorry for the gushing actually, because apart from that, this is a very credible and well-balanced beer in unmistakably Belgian style. It has enough ’untidiness’ and rural character to qualify as a saison and what is more: this is not even a bad one. I had many new generation saisons (also from Belgium) which have a lot less to tell than this one. Unless you take one single beer (Dupont Saison) as a standard, it is very hard to determine what this style is about, even for Belgian brewers; seeing a German brewer capture the basic elements of the style, is something I never expected to happen. The gushing aside (or even included, actually :-p), this is as Belgian as it gets, even brewed by our neighbors. I am sincerely impressed just by the fact that German micro brewers are beginning to understand saison... Zum Wohl!

Bottled 330ml (BDLX)
Hazy orange-amber color, medium-sized white head. Tartish, dry yeasty, fruity and a bit grassy aroma. Light to medium-bodied. Active carbonation. Tartish, almost a bit acidic, spicey Saison yeasty with some grassy hops. Thin. Homebrewish. Yeast has been a bit too active.

Pours a fairly clear golden color, topped with a big white head, slowly going away. Fruity aroma with some spicy notes present. Similar in the taste, some sweet feel with more spices and a little bitterness in the finish. Not too bad, a bit more spicy than I’d like. But ok.
