Anchor Saison is a traditional Belgian-style saison with a California twist. The distinctiveness of roasted Belgian wheat malt is enhanced by the peppery, clove-like flavors of a locally cultured saison-style yeast. And, for this release, we chose three California ingredients—lemongrass, lemon peel, and ginger—whose synergy adds a tangy crispness and herbal spiciness to this sharply refreshing, uniquely Californian saison.

Pour is a clear dark golden with a small white head. Aroma is sweet bubblegum with some fruity esters. Flavor is a bit bitter then comes some spice and maybe a touch of honey. Finish is a kind of lactic citrus bitterness with an alcohol bite. Nothing from the yeast really shows up. Kinda disappointing that Anchor could not make a better saison.

Pours deep gold into a tulip. Bright white head with medium retention recedes to skim surface. Sweet candy aromas. Sweet, dry bubblegum upfront turning to bitter lemon and earth before the lasting pith finish.

12 ounce bottle. Bright clear honey gold color with a moderate foamy beige head. Yeasty citrus aroma. Sharp yeasty malt flavor has lots of lemon and earthy notes. Quite tasty and refreshing with a peppery hop mid taste. Dry spicy finish has more citrus notes.

Bottle server in snifter. Dark orange without much head. Not really a saison style to me. Bitter-edged taste that lingers quite a while.

Bottle thanks to me bro, Markimus. It pours clear orange-amber with a small white head. The nose is sweet, doughy, straw, light spice, spring onion and orange marmalade. The taste is crisp, bitter, malty, light spring onion, lemongrass, touch of spice, citrus rind and stewed orange with a dry finish. Medium body and moderate-high carbonation. I’m not 100% sure on this one... Maybe a touch oniony, but if you can past that it’s ok...

Bottle from St Pancras Sourced Market. Deep, clear gold with very little head. Aroma of citrus and vinegar, ginger and cardamom. Taste has a natural sweetness complemented by a crisp acidic sour-bitterness. An odd taste I can’t place; I think it may be the lemongrass. Long bittersweet finish and aftertaste. This is quite good if rather strange and jumbled.

Bottle. Hop Hideout, Sheffield. Clear gold. Thin, sticky, white head. Soft, sweet, bready malt. Light, medicinal thing going on. Taste is dry, light bitter, with a toffee sweet edge. Palate is a bit boozy, and a bit acidic. Finishes fairly bitter. Got the ginger right at the end. A bit all over the shop. Like a hopped up wit.

Bottle from Drinkstore, Dublin [210914]
Golden amber, slight haze, frothy white head that dissipates
Aroma of mainly soft ginger, bit spicy
Taste of soft ginger, sweet light caramel malts, hint of lemon, bit peppery, slight clove, dab of alcohol, subtle flavour, ginger dominates the taste, fresh
Palate - soft carb, light to medium body, fairly sweet. Finish of soft spicy ginger, some warming alcohol
Overall - Not like a traditional Belgian saison at all, hardly any of that saison yeast character in their. Quite pleasant - think I would prefer this on keg a bit cooler
