Anchor Saison is a traditional Belgian-style saison with a California twist. The distinctiveness of roasted Belgian wheat malt is enhanced by the peppery, clove-like flavors of a locally cultured saison-style yeast. And, for this release, we chose three California ingredients—lemongrass, lemon peel, and ginger—whose synergy adds a tangy crispness and herbal spiciness to this sharply refreshing, uniquely Californian saison.

Rated May 2015. 12oz bottle pours with a crystal clear deep gold body that has copper hues and supports a thin white head. The modest aroma offers up spicy saison yeasty notes as well as apple, fig and pear fruity sweetness. The taste rushes forward with saison spiciness, apple and fig fruitiness and then yielding to more spices and a cracked black pepper sensation. A decent saison but leans toward being a bit too sluggish and sweet and not pulling up the lighter crispness I enjoy in far too few saisons.

12oz bottle. Really, really, really wish they didn’t add the spices. Anchor is capable of finessing the style a little more than most, then they throw it all out the window with the additions. This is still pretty decent for the style, albeit a little stronger and full bodied than a typical example. Honey herbal tinges. OK.

12 oz bottle. Pours amber, clear with a white head. Aroma is yeasty and green grape, moving into some more clove-like spices. Flavor’s pretty nice: spiciness, green grape, and yeastiness, citrus and a bit of bitterness.

Bottle. Gold color and low carbonation. Some clove and lemongrass, some spice. Palate seems a little thin and flavor is not as strong as in the better saisons. Alcohol is a little high.

Bottle from real ale store Newark. Amber colour with a thin white head. Aroma is light and has a touch of yeast. The taste fruity and a touch sharpe. Very refreshing.

This was poured into a tulip.
The appearance was a nice looking hazy amber color with a light carbonation seen rising to fill a quickly dissipating head. No lacing.
The smell had a crisp sweet fresh blend of citrus to grassy hops. Bready yeastiness combines to wrap it together.
The taste starts off bready and leads to the sweet blend of citrus to grassy hops. Low bitterness all around. Sweet sticky aftertaste leads to a sweet grassy finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. The carbonation was somewhat subdued but still good for me and for the style.
Overall, this was a pretty good seasonal saison that I would have again.

Single bottle, $1.42 @ Trader Joe’s. A nice smell of fresh berries pops out from under the cap. Beer itself is pale golden color, with a hint of blush, under a frothy head. Once I poke my beak into the glass itself, I have the note of ginger, coming in a little stronger at each sniff. Taste is fine, although ginger becomes a bit overwhelming, and needs the citrus to keep it in check. But then the malt takes over, and it seems to be as light as the regular Anchor Steam, but it warms up the impression of the beer and improves my attitude toward it. Only complaint at the end is a bit of lactic mouthfeel.

Nice stubby Anchor bottle, lovely label. Pours a clear and bright orange color with a small white head. A big zesty fruity nose. The flavor works well: oranges, lemons, ginger, spicy, a big fruity base with lighter Belgian yeast. Very good, super drinkable beer.

It definitely has some desirable Saison qualities going on with the spices but there's too much hop bitterness for my liking.

Some bodega: pours gold with white head. Lemon, grass, some light saison funk. Taste is not that good and certainly worse than aroma. Body is kind of watery especially considering the relatively high booze level. Meh.
