Anchor Saison is a traditional Belgian-style saison with a California twist. The distinctiveness of roasted Belgian wheat malt is enhanced by the peppery, clove-like flavors of a locally cultured saison-style yeast. And, for this release, we chose three California ingredients—lemongrass, lemon peel, and ginger—whose synergy adds a tangy crispness and herbal spiciness to this sharply refreshing, uniquely Californian saison.

Bottle from World Beer Market served in a tulip. This saison pours an orange gold with a fizzy head of off-white foam. The aroma is wheat, lemon & a touch of ginger. The taste is a bit ascerbic, earthy lemon, chewy wheat and a bit of sweet citrus in the finish. Not super saison like in the classic sense more a saison/fruit beer hybrid but quite refreshing. I don’t see why this needed to be 7.2% ABV though... I’d prefer it in the 4-5% range.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 2/10/2015. Pours fairly crystal clear golden orange color with a 1 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big lemon, ginger, apricot, pear, apple, light banana/bubblegum, pepper, clove, cracker, biscuit, light honey, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness. Nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/earthy yeast, spices, and bready malt notes; with good strength. Taste of lemon, ginger, apricot, pear, apple, light banana/bubblegum, clove, pepper, cracker, biscuit, light honey, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness. Good amount of earthy yeast spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon, ginger, apricot, pear, apple, light banana/bubblegum, clove, pepper, biscuit, light honey, and herbal/yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice complexity and robustness of fruity/earthy yeast, spices, and bready malt flavors; with a very nice malt/yeast/spice balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, crisp, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is a nice spiced saison style. All around godo robustness, complexity, and balance of fruity/earthy yeast, spices, and bready malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink for the ABV. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Bottle from Tanakaya. Poured into a Duvel tulip. Pours a dark orange color with a small head that dissipates almost instantly. Big aromas of ginger, bread and saison yeast. There is also some lemon and white pepper present. Quite malty and a little too heavy for a saison. Almost full-bodied with a strong biscuity malt character. Starts out with a hint of sweetness then a full on spice and pepper onslaught comes. Ginger, lemongrass, citrus, corriander, white pepper and cardamom are all there. Long lasting spicy finish. --- Beer merged from original tick of Saison Spring Ale on 30 May 2015 at 21:42 - Score: 6

35cl Bottle from Sterk. Clear amber colour, white head. Aroma of lots of spices, coreander, quite sweet, reminds me a lot of Leffe Blond. Flavour is sweet, spicy, malty, alcoholic, some toast, decent nutty and herbal bitterness, but too sweet and Leffe-like. Medium bodied. Not bad, but stil disappointing.

Bottle at home in London - shared with the missus. Pours clear gold with a fluffy white head. Lots of saison yeast in the nose, some banana peel, grains and wheat, citric hops. Medium sweet flavor with slight booze, more grains, lightly toasted wheat, dried banana, hay, some leaves. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Lightly warming finish, some fusel notes, more yeast, bread, grain husk, citrus. Uninspiring.

Bottle from March 2015, drunk 4/30/15
Typical anchor pour, that is, quite a large foamy head initially, but fairly poorly retained. Body is quite carbonated, with just a touch of chill haze and a brassy-peach-blonde color.
Vague aroma shows light pepper interacting with the ginger and lemongrass to give it an odd earthy-spicy sort of aroma....Hey, at least it’s not a banana-bubble gum bomb, amIright??! No alcohol in the nose and some honey and sweet white dough from the malts.
Ginger and lemongrass add both light astringency and moderate spiciness, while the bigger-than-average body throws a fair amount of sweetness at you (lemon sugar cookies, dry toffee). I’ve certainly had far, far sweeter saisons many a time, and it dosent scream underattenuation at you, but the earthy, spicy and sweet flavor notes certainly don’t refresh. As well, the carbonation is not overly "tight" leaving wateriness and more sugars on the end. They went through the trouble of culturing a local saison yeast and then completely covered it up with malt, alcohol and spices. Confusing.

Bottle. Fragrant, spicy nose, lemon, biscuits, ginger, interesting, but a bit too thick and malty. Dark orange, clear, low head. Spicy yeast, bready and malty, citrus, lemon. Again, nice flavors, but too rich and malty. Nice bitter finish, though. Relatively full body. Overall a pleasant American saison. Not as crisp and refreshing as I like, but overall pretty tasty and enjoyable.
