A full-bodied, hoppy Red Ale brewed with rye malt. Peppery notes with a hint of spice held up by a big, bold, malty backbone. It’s complex, flavourful and interesting.

But, it’s not all about the malt with Hook Island Red. Kilos of West Coast hops – Chinook, Columbus and Simcoe – add flavours of resinous pine with a hint of passionfruit.

On tap @Mad for Beer (Rome). Deep amber color with a medium and persistent off-white head. Aroma is malty, caramel, some roasted notes, grass, dirty socks, bad! Flavour is sweet and malty, caramel, light bitter end. Medium body, medium to light carbonation. Forget it!

Gravity cask at the Cambridge Beer Festival 2015. Amber/copper, a bit cloudy. Light aroma with toast, red berry and a hint of pine. The taste though. Wow. Intensely resinous, a sweet spicy hop bomb augmented by the sweet spiciness of the rye. Long, oily, piney finish. Lovely.

Bottle, Londis, Penny Lane, Liverpool. Reddish amber pour, with a meek tan head. Some earthy hop and fruit in the beak. Good fruity hops coupled up with some sweet malts and fruits flavour wise, followed by a solid bitter linger in the finish. Some promise here.
