With more than 20 speciality malts, two separate mashes and three oak varieties, this is one of the most ambitious recipes we've ever attempted. Expect caramel, honey, nuttiness, chocolate, coffee and subtle smokiness all coming through with refined depth. Rich residual sugars balance with oak tannins to keep the beer drinkable, moreish and spectacularly flavoursome.

Keg draught at the Two-Tailed Lion, Leicester. Dark brownand opaque with a thin film of beige head and lots of lacing. Big dark malts in the aroma, some treacle, some yeast extract. Bittersweet taste with notes of salted caramel and soured stone fruit lead to an intense bitter hoppy finish. Light salted notes in aftertaste. Wow. One hell of a beer.

440ml can from Battle of Bill, Cheras, Malaysia. Poured a clear dark brown colour with a lasting frothy tan head. The aroma is roasty malt, aromatic, floral hops. The flavour is moderate sweet and liqourice bitter, with a rich, slightly oily, roasty, smokey, red berry fruit, herbal, floral, light warm alcohol bitter palate. Medium to full bodied with flat carbonation. Really nicely balanced with well hidden alcohol.

Can @ webshop. Pours Black with a small creamy White head. Roast, coffee and ashtray. Slight peat. Roasted and dry with a bitter finish. Full bodied. Def. Not a fan of peated smoke. Other than that a solid base.

Black beer, thin head. Smells really malty, with some me chocolate. Tastes malt, toast, chocolate, some anise. The malt is the winner here though. Rich, smooth, well balanced, tasty, too drinkable.
