With more than 20 speciality malts, two separate mashes and three oak varieties, this is one of the most ambitious recipes we've ever attempted. Expect caramel, honey, nuttiness, chocolate, coffee and subtle smokiness all coming through with refined depth. Rich residual sugars balance with oak tannins to keep the beer drinkable, moreish and spectacularly flavoursome.

Can from A Hoppy Place, Windsor. Aroma of coffee and moreso liqourice. Underlying malts. Dark and glossy, cola brown. Thick foamy tan head. Sweet with underlying bitterness. Liqourice and molasses, dark fruit and coffee. A boozey bite into the finish. Thick bodied. Creamy. Average carbonation. Long astringent finish. Enjoyable but could do with dialling down the sweetness.

Can at home in Hackney - picked up via HOTM. Pours black with a big, cascading frothy khaki head. Nice ashy roast character, some dark chocolate, baking cocoa, scorched earth, cedar wood, subtle smoke and black coffee. Full bodied, oily and chewy, with fine, massaging carbonation and velvety texture. Warming finish, lightly sticky, more torched wood, earth, layered cocoa character. It's a really solid, nicely complex impy stout.

Pours black, small ring of tanned head. Smell is coffee, light smoke. Tad ashy. Taste is full, creamy, soft coffee. Mild smoke. Oak is clear, but remains specifically oak (no previous fill-flavor, so don't expect stuff like bourbon ) fullbodied, creamy, low carbo. Not bad!

Can at home picked up from Siren online. A jet black coloured pour with a lasting mid tan frothy head. Aroma is nice meaty earthy roast, liquorice, star anise, tangy roast, edge, petal, waxy. Flavour is composed of semi sweet, rounded roasted malts, meaty, burnt cakey malts, pinch of salt, light tangy roast, warming alcohol. Palate is medium full, rounded, light tang, smooth, lowish carbonation. waxy. Good stuff.

Can thanks to allmyvinyl. Appearance - opaque black with an olive sheen. Fawn head. Nose - tonnes of coffee, dark chocolate and hazelnut. Cookie dough. Taste - molasses, cookie dough again and smoky finish. On the edge of both liquorice and blackcurrant. Palate - medium bodied creamy texture. Smoky, persistent linger. Overall - a tasty multi dimensional beer.
