At the request of the “Foundation Abbey, Town and Region” and the Town of Sint-Truiden, a special abbey beer was brewed on the occasion of the first open abbey days in 2002. What makes Adelardus Dubbel so special, is the use of so-called ‘gruut’. This is a mixture of about 10 different indigenous herbs. Further five types of malts and two types of Belgian hops are used. Adelardus Dubbel is a dark brown high fermentation beer, that is unfiltered, unpasteurized with a secondary fermentation in the bottle. Adelardus Dubbel has a full taste with a very soft, spicy nose and a slightly bitter aftertaste.

(Bottle, 0.33 l - BB 24.11.2027, at Stadin Panimobaari, 20241101) The beer poured dark brown and clear. Its head was medium sized and lightly tanned. Aroma had toasted malts, candi sugar, grass and spicy yeast. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were toasted malts, grass, candi sugar, spicy yeast and bitterness. Aftertaste was dry, and had toasted malts and bitterness. A tasty malty brew with subtle sweetness and yeasty notes.

Bottle, 0.33l. Muddy brown pour, one finger creamy beige head, long lasting. Thick lacing on the glass. Nose is ripe fruits, toasted caramel, figs. Mild spice notes in the background. Medium body, medium carbonation. Smooth mouthfeel and texture, soft, chewy, slightly fizzy. Easily drinkable. Nicely balanced bittersweet taste. Aroma of dark malt, toasted caramel, yeast, bread. Spice, brown sugar, dried fruits, raisins, figs. Subtle lingering alcohol, drying, slightly sticky. Mild hops in the background. Medium lasting finish, slightly liquory. Not bad.

Bottled 330ml. -at Ambasada Zagreb. Brownish coloured, medium sized pale beige head, caramel and light alcohol in the nose. Sweet malty, caramel, touch of dried fruits and mild spicy with some alcohol in the finish.

On tap @Brasserie 4:20 (Rome). Bruna con riflessi rossicci, schiuma bianca media e persistente. Al naso sentori di zucchero di canna, caramello, toffee, frutta candita, spezie. In bocca è dolce, maltata, zuccherosa, caramello, finale appena bilanciato da un amaro tenue. Corpo medio, carbonazione medio-leggera. Bel dolcione, ma buona.

Il gusto al naso è indirizzato verso il fruttato. L'olfatto viene stimolato in maniera normale e l'esistenza olfattiva è sufficiente. Il cappello di schiuma resiste abbastanza. La grandezza delle bollicine è medio-fine, con qualche bollicina grande. Il liquido offre una visione offuscata. Il colore è ebano chiaro. Il corpo è pieno. L'amaro è contenuto. La forza gustativa è elevata e la durata è sufficiente. Le sensazioni boccali finali risultano di birra beverina. Il retrogusto è di decente intensità. Al gusto vengono donati toni di caramello, miele, biscotto, frutta secca, agrumi, spezie, mandarino ed erbe aromatiche.
